How long will it hurt?

    Hi there,
Just over a week ago, I had a lower right back molar removed (one of the big boyos) and the dentist told me I could expect some discomfort afterwards. I took a weeks prescription of penicillin to stop it getting infected, but a week on, its actually hurting more now than after the removal.

Its a kind of throbbing pain thats extending from the socket right through my jaw. Last night it started extending down my jaw and across to my ear, and I'm convinced its getting worse. Dont know if its of relevance or not, but there appears to be ripped flesh in the socket that is going a weird non healthy off white color. Should I be concerned about this? Pain is managable with a large amount of over the counter pain killers, but should it be getting worse now, or should i get back to the dentist?
    thanks

My advice - ring the dentist, and talk to him directly. If all else fails, go back to him

Yeah talk to your dentist. If you're looking for painkillers, Nurofen is best for teeth problems in my experience.

sounds like dry socket. your dentist will place a dressing in the socket that will ease the pain.

I had a similar problem about two years ago after an extraction, initially they thought it was a dry socket, which in your case it may very well be, but in my case it turned out that a small piece of the root had been left in and they took it out, problem solved...

Important thing is talk to your dentist ASAP, something is awry, you souldnt be experiencing that kind of pain at this stage......
