I'm looking for a software for digital manipulation for picture. Something like Photoshop but a bit cheaper :) Any suggestions?

ive been using paint shop pro for a number of years, ive also used photoshop, while photoshop is better its takes more getting used to.

A cheaper alternative would be photoshop elements, i got my copy free with a cannon digital camera

It might be available for free download, especially the older 2.0 version:o

The Gimp is a very powerful program, and is completly free! Google it!

There's plenty of tutorials available too.

The Gimp is a very, very powerful tool. As I'm the resident Linux/open source head here, I use it for most of my photos (in conjunction with ufraw) and I've had few complaints with it other than its occasionally assinine UI.

The gimps UI nearly made me vomit, no matter how powerful it is, it's simply disgusting to use, but there is gimpshop to sort of fix that-it's still got nothing on photoshop. I use lightzone for photo manipulation, I've found it to be better than paint shop pro and it's similarly priced. But If you're not just using it for touching up photos then I would recommend PSP. I'm VERY amateur when it comes to photography so my opinion might not be worth anything here....

I use Photoshop and PSP. I could never get to grips with the Gimp interface either.

    Which leads to....

Anybody know of any legal means of getting ones hands on CS2 at a semi-reasonable cost? Our US Canon owning cousins were able to get it for $299 last year, but no such joy for us poor mugs over here.

I've read about people buying PS7 licenses on EBay, then upgrading, but not sure what the legality of this is in the first place (transfer of license etc), and is also I would imagine a minefield in terms of getting screwed. Has anbody gone down this path?

That said, I might just wait to see what Lightroom has to offer. Given that Adobe bought Pixmantec and immediately killed Rawshooter, I need some means of converting my raw files in the future, plus as a result I'm supposedly due some "upgrade path to the Adobe digital imaging family" :(

Try serif photoplus, its free for the older versions and has most of the main features of photoshop. Also very user friendly, now granted I havn't used photoshop in years so cant give a unbiased opinion.

But its free so you have nothing to lose.

Yeah I was sickened when I heard that Pixmantec were accquired by the fat spider. Apparently it'll be incorporated into Lightroom (well I hope). I still got my RawShooter Premium though so I guess I'll get a few more months out of that.

From what I've heard, Lightroom is way too close to being done for them to incorporate Rawshooter into it now. It seems as though they bought it strictly in order to eliminate some competition.

I'd say elements would be the way to go because then if you ever get to the stage where you want to upgrade to ps cs2 or whatever is out at the time, you don't have to learn the interface all over again.

I came across this today. I haven't tried it but it talks a good game and costs USD 89.

Given that it's Adobe, they won't be shy of charging for it. I've heard $299 bandied about - probably make that even more euros. It's a pain non Mac users can't even see what it has to offer yet, though from looking at the specs, I'd hazard a guess I'm going to have to fork out for new hardware to run the bloody thing - RawShooter ran happily, albeit a bit slowly, on a 5 year old 1.7GHz Dell. :(
