    Ok,

So I watched for a while,.

Then you got to stop the questions,. and think??

Ok, poker is still relatively new in Ireland as a sporting/betting passtime.
The majority of players seem to be male, no offence to the females, but the populace is dominated by the males.

I on the other hand am Female, love a game of cards, but do not necessarily want to spend my weekend trying to convince my female compatriots that this is a great night out, come play poker at the Fitz the Sporting Emporium, if there is not something for them.

Sell it to me boys/folks... I love to play, I know it's a game, but surely if this industry is to survive getting the ladies with more wallet than sense is not such a bad thing,. ???

I know it's fun, I know it calls a bloodrush to occur, I know it cost's money that has been put aside to pay the rent, but encourage me to get the ladies with the REAL leather wallets in,. ,,,,,....

Ignore Hector, He finds it hard to talk to girls :D:D:D

    Kinky,
Have the girls ever gone racing, or to Shelbourne dogs?. They probably didnt look forward to it, but once they got there they had a great time.
Going to poker is a bit like that.

If the girls are single, tell them the poker rooms are places where there will be a lot of handsome single guys, guys who enough of an income that they can afford to spend a lot of time and money in posh casinos. This might be a good selling point.

Theres a few girls who post on this forum (Smurph, Nicky from PaddyPower, and NickyO'D from Limerick) who'll prob come along to give you their thoughts on it a well.

Yep done the dog racing thing, and yes, will not deny it has been fun.
Last time we went to Dundalk and that was fun, on a corporate night, lots of champers etc.
But like I say, poker, to me, is a game, the dogs, well everyone knows the dogs are not all that...

Looking forward to what the other ladies have to say, and to be honest, I do not want this to turn into a thread that seems only in pursuit of hot guys to amuse the girlies, it is not only about that, if only some one would open a casino that combines all the elements of fun, intrigue, excitement, temptation, on and off the tables and good tournament chalenges!!..

    Maybe,.....

Stop hi-jacking my thread for your love lives, or lack of, LOL (Kidding).

So while the subject is open, which are the best clubs to go to play poker with the girls that have some decent male talent?

Of course a good game of poker is paramount, and the preference is for somewhere that would house cash games as well as tournaments.

If she was playing in the Fitz on Friday nights then she wouldn't need to be asking where all the male talent is Rounders. Sure, weren't you there yourself!?

On topic... (I think - I'm not really sure what the topic is)... The marketing behind poker (online in particular) and the image being pushed out there, I think, is probably isolating a large proportion of the population. It's time to bring more girls into poker!

Hi smurph here (female poker play). I play in the Fitzwilliam Card Club and sometimes i venture outside the pale (nose bleed) and play in the Drogheda Tournament, which Mike Lacey runs from Green Joker Poker. It is a €250 Freeze Out, in The Boyne Valley Hotel, Drogheda and is on the first Sunday of each Month, next one on 6th August.

There isn't a huge amount of female poker players around, but you cetainly seem to get alot playing in the Fitzwilliam. The Drogheda tournamet have maybe 4 women to 95 or so men. Ive been playing cards for years so never really took much notice of the lack of women poker players, First time i went to the Drogheda tournamet, i was the only female player, which was strange. Actually I met my other half Martin, through cards. We knew eachother for years, and were going out couple of years now.

Anyway if you are in the fitz, give me a shout and i'll introduce you to some of the smooth talking boards members, LOL.

    To the OP,

In relation to your questions about how to convince your girlfriends to play a bit of Poker, without resorting to the usual line of "Hot guys"....

What I'd say is that, TBH the game sells itself, what I'd suggest is that instead of getting all the girls to jump head first into a casino, you should organise a friendly home game so that they can all learn the game (i.e. the rules, hand rankings, etc. etc.).

Open a couple bottles of wine/beer/ whatever, play for €50, (a half-decent amount of money, so they won't be put off when they go to the Casino and have to pay alot more than they did here) and then just play a tournament or three (there's a good site that tells you everything you need to know for this, but I can't remember what it is now , someone will post it here I'm sure)

And honestly the game will sell itself. I got my GF into it a couple of years ago and once she understood the rules, what beats what, etc. (e.g. the Flush beating a straight always seemed to be the tricky one for her  ), she really enjoyed it. In fact, for nearly everyone I've introduced to Poker, I've always found that the hardest part is getting them to actually sit down and play for the first time, once they start then I just let the game do the rest.

I read this thread the other day and I found myself agreeing with HJ in that I wasn't sure if the thread was a wind up or not.

But I guess the origins of the thread don't really matter because it raises an interesting point and something I've thought about a number of times. I've made a few suggestions at the end for Kinky which I hope are helpful, the rest of the post is a bit of a rant and my own personally held views. Feel free to rebuke me on them.

I think we can all agree on a few points:

    1. That a euro invested in poker by a female is as useful to the game and the industry as a male euro invested.

    2. Bigger numbers playing poker in Ireland and generally is good for the game and the industry for a number of reasons.

    3. In general the higher the female participation ratio in an activity the higher the level of general social acceptance of that activity and in light of the "moral high-ground" from which people are preaching about the perils of poker at the minute the more women who understand and participate in the game the better it is for the social climate surrounding the game in Ireland.

So for these and other less noble/rational reasons  I don't think there is anybody on this board who would argue they want to see less women playing poker in Ireland.

Now the interesting part of the debate as I see it is the question "why don't more women play poker?"

A few things that I think are relevant are

    1. Women don't like to gamble as much or as heavily as men. Women are naturally and generally (I know this is not true in all cases but I think its generally the case) more cautious and risk adverse. I've met plenty of men who wouldn't bet €5 in their lives but I've met a lot more women who detest gambling and don't get any enjoyment from it. When you first start playing poker you are most definitely gambling and if it wasn't for luck you would be guaranteed to lose. You've got to be prepared to lose (and continue to lose for quite some time) at the start of your poker career. Anyone who tells you any different is lying. Women are put off by this fact.

    2. Women are also put-off in some instances by the covert and in most cases not so covert naked competitiveness of poker. Women are every bit as competitive as men but rarely so openly.

    3. Women are more likely to be uncomfortable in social situations where they don't know anybody and require a group or a gang to attend such situations. We've all seen plenty of male posters on this board who were uncomfortable at the thoughts of going to the casino for the first time. I remember my first two times hitting the casino I went in and just played blackjack just to get the feel for the place. LOL I hate blackjack (but I was an overall winner on those two sessions ;) ). Then I read a book explaining how poker is offered by casinos and the lingo surrounding the game etc. before ever sitting down for a game. Getting women into a casino to play poker involves an even higher degree of handholding then is required for male players.

These are the main causes of the lower participation in poker by women imho.

So how do you address these issues?

I never lie or hide the truth about poker to any newbie to the game and I don't think pretending that there isn't a steep learning curve and that you won't lose money is no way to get people into the game long-term. If someone isn't comfortable losing a decent amount of money then they aren't going to play. Ireland is a country with a small and slowly growing entrepreneurial base. This will change gradually if the government doesn't kill the country by choking it with high paid civil servants and this will lead to increased numbers of women who are open minded about playing a game involving risk taking. This will be a slow process but it will hopefully happen.

I know a number of female poker players and without exception they have all had plenty of gamble about them and are very independent minded. I think there are increasing numbers of highly educated women willing to take risks and poker will attract its fair share.

By stressing the strategies and the theories of the game you will attract these women to the game over time. These women won't be fish long-term so you can certainly argue the merits of not encouraging them to play. I suspect you may be one of these women Kinky so I suggest you read widely on poker and play more. You will get more from the game the more you learn and the more you play. By posting on this board and by showing the interest you have shown so far I suspect there is a good chance you will become a long term player whether or not you have a gang of friends joining you for a game.

If you want to encourage female fish to play generally now that's a different story.

You've got to make them feel comfortable in the casino environment, and at the table. You might need to have events like a ladies night (with no reg for new female members). Also things like spot prizes or best hand prizes etc. to spread the number of winners on a given night. Basically exactly the same things that are done by pub tournies to encourage male "players". This could be done especially if you combined such events with maybe a female only poker school run in the casino by a female player to give the women a chance to learn the lingo and get comfortable in the cardroom environment.

In your specific circumstances Kinky the best thing to do is to have a home game run to proper casino rules and make a fun night out of it. Then if your friends are interested in taking it further try a field trip to a casino and play something like Oscar's €30 freezeout game on a Sunday afternoon or a freeroll. But going by my own experience of maybe 20 players (over the years) from my own poker game only 6 or 7 have gone on to play in a casino in Ireland one of those was female. So don't expect miracles. Not everyone (whether male or female) is going to want to play the game long-term, don't fight it just adjust to it and make friends with some new people (both male and female) who do play poker.

I now know a lot of people through poker that I didn't know before and whom I consider friends. You'll find these people have similar world views and see things in an independent way like you and it's no wonder that they play poker. Embrace poker as a chance to meet these people and most of all enjoy yourself. Life is too short not to.

Well the phrase ain't poker and rock'n'roll now is it? If you are in the music biz you have to appear in a few tabloids, have kiss and tell stories told, arrested for possession etc.

Papers won't be to interested in a headline of 'Music star in one outer sensation' now will they?

Completely OT: no but they will be interested that I finished the album today at a quarter to five. We're all going getting drunk. Might be stumbling into the fitz very late and very drunk tonight, to be hit by 12 outer shock horror, followed by a night of chasing to get even.
