Anyone ever used a self standing monopod?

I am just about to buy a monopod and I'm always wondering whether or not that extra bit of support would make all the difference.
Has anyone ever used a self standing monopod ?? ,I don't want to get it if it's no use ,I'll just get a normal one. (Don't want a bulkier item without the benefit.)
A paticular model I was looking at was a manfrotto MA 682B

    Thanks.

Thanks mtracey ,are they stable though with a camera on the top or do they move a little. I'm basically looking to take the monopod out at night while I'm on the bike .
