Has 'Snakes on a Plane' started a new age of silliness??

I was reading in Empire about a new film called Black Sheep, which has a plot that makes Snakes on a Plane seem sophisticated and, like Snakes, is starting to gather a cult following on the internet.
In fairness, how could it not:
    IMDB wrote:
Tagline: There are 40 million sheep in New Zealand....and they're pissed off!

Plot Outline: An experiment in genetic engineering turns harmless sheep into blood-thirsty killers that terrorize a sprawling New Zealand farm.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0779982/

If the plot isn't enough to make you laugh, check out some pictures:

Will deliberately silly movies become a new Hollywood 'thing' because of the success of Snakes on a Plane?

Troma are class.....some of their bigger movies like Toxic Avenger IV and Troma War are actually pretty high budget with great effects!

Of course 95% of their other films have the budget of a packed lunch....

No but what a great line :p

There's a big feature on Snakes in this month's Empire, they show a load of fan art, some of it is golden :)

I thought Snakes on a Plane was gonna be somewhat tongue in cheek but I just saw an ad and it took itself very seriously! I dunno what to expect from it but after all the hype I hope it's good.

Snakes on a plane.. I guess for me.. to understand the appeal you have to take in a few different areas :

B-Movies always always had a fan base.. and they still do. This is a high concept, simple setup and I would wager not much on buget compared to POTC, MATRIX, Star Wars etc.. Add to this the input the fans have had : preventing a name change.. getting a different cut.. more gore, more nudity etc.. this alone is unheard of in Hollywood.. the fans now have a vested interest in this movie : they have helped create it and the film makers should be applauded for listening.

Peter Jackson started out making films like this, see Brain Dead, which is referenced in the Sheeps article you mentioned earlier, with WETA providing effects for it. These are GENRE films.. they are not blockbusters.. so they appeal to a certain part of the moviegoing public. If you don't like it/are not interested that's cool, but at least see it before deriding it and predicting that it's opened the door to a glut of bargin bin style cheap movies.

Part of the draw is someone like Sam Jackson who gets on board (pun inteneded) and says "I just wanna do it cos it sounds cool". this alone generates media hype giving it an excape from Straight-to-DVD hell. His star power is probably why it's getting the placement it is.

It was a cult project on the internet before Empire started to champion it (which is has been doing for some months now). Think Donnie Darko for a reference to the power the internet can have in growing a movie's stature and popularity. That film only survived because of underground success.

The bottom line.. sometimes people just want something that's fun simple and doesn't try to pretend to be something it's not. There's more respect there for honest film making.. whatever the topic :)

I don't know how good it will be.. but hell it deserves a chance :o I would wager a lot of the people who are genuinely interested in this wil leave happier than the people who walked out after Miami Vice somewhat unsatisfied.. I love Michael Mann.. but Colin Farrell ruined that film for me.
