Phantom Virtual Drive

For a few months now the elusive (E) drive shown below has been on My Computer and when I tried to get rid of it recently I assumed that it was a virtual drive from one of the many image mounting programs I had installed on my PC. The software packages I had installed were Nero 7 (ImageTool), Alcohol 120%, ISObuster, Daemontools and PowerISO.

On this note I went through the options for each of them to unmount all drives only to find that there were no drives mounted and the (E) drive was still visible in My Computer. My previous action failing I decided upon uninstalling all the virtual drive emulation programs and rebooting my system.

To my dismay the (E) drive was still there. I definitely don't have a DVD drive and what's more why is my CD drive (H), shouldn't it be (D)?

I cant remember where it is in the options for PowerISO or Alcohol 120% but have did you set number of Virtual Drives to 0 (or disabled) before uninstalling?

You could also take a look at the device manager and try un-installing any of the drivers related to the virtual drive and see what happens.

For example Alcohol installes a driver under SCSI controllers and under DVD/CD-ROM Drives.

Yes I disabled all the drivers in all of the virtual emulation software packages.

On reading your post I went through all the drivers in Device Manager and there was one under CD/DVD-ROM devices and uninstalled it. Thanks 8T8.

On reboot the drive is back in My Computer again and the driver has been reinstalled. Any thoughts?

Instead of uninstalling the device, disable it.

Or, if you have xp pro:
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disc Management

Right click on the E: drive, change drive letter, and set it to blank.
Then go ahead and make that CD drive your D: drive.

In Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disc Management > CD-ROM 3 > Change Drive Letter and Paths... > it is impossible to select the drive letter as blank because you are presented with a list box as opposed to a combo box although this took care of changing the physical CD Drive back to (D).

Unable to set the virtual drive to blank I removed the drive through the same window. In addition via Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM Drives I disabled the driver for the virtual drive labelled MX2I52G3 VHK130J SCSI CdRom Device (sic) and uninstalled it. On reboot thanks to snappieT's insight the virtual drive no longer appears in My Computer but on rechecking Device Manager the driver is still installed and also in Disc Management it remains dormant and is only to be removed from this list when disabled and/or uninstalled via device manager which in effect will just last until the next reboot.

I have looked through regedit > Starup > and not found anything that looks like it could be reviving the driver but maybe I don't exactly know what I'm looking for?

If anyone has any theories on how to clinically remove this hang in driver the floor is open to you.
