After reading/viewing this thread >> Link I think most would agree that those photos would inspire many ppl to give photo manipulation a shot. I, myself do photo manipulation and I love it.

I know some will say it's not strictly photography, but how about in the light of that thread it would be nice to see how people tackled the challenge. I think it'd be cool to at least try it for one comp, and see how it goes.

    Let the poll the decide*..

Personally,i would love to see such a competition.I wouldn't be doing anything myself,as i'm just not skilled enough. As for people saying it's not strictly photography, well i would disagree with that. The vast majority of shots are altered or enhanced in some way and what is wrong with that? Why say that it's allright to get the best out of a shot, but not to manipulate it to arrive at a place that you imagined when you took it.Are we to put a limit on what someone does,a cut off point where someone deems it is no longer valid.Personally,I enjoy images that move me,whether they be a "straight" shot of a great expression,or something heavilly manipulted with great colour, light or shadow.

A good idea even though I am very much in the beginner stages of photo manip. Plus One. :)

    I voted yes ,but
Is it not regarded as art ,as in a work of art .
I thought photography was capturing someting in it's essence . You don't need a camera to do photo manipulation ,so why have it in a photography forum ??.
I don't think anyone should show work that wasn't originally shot by them.

But surely it's ok to show stuff you have shot and then manipulated in whatever way your creative juices take you.For example, that shot of the merc by shrimp,he took that photo,so what is the harm in him adding things in,taking them out, changing the colour or light or what ever else his skills allow him to do,untill he eventually arrives at an image that does something for HIM ?

Thats not always the case with shrimp ,he does manip art he hasn't photographed.

A good idea for a contest. How would you run it? I could see several ways being interesting : "here's a picture. Do what you can with it" or "follow this theme" or "use this class of manipulation on a picture of your choice" or "just show off your skills any way you like" etc.

yeah, but of course I wouldn't enter a competition that would prohibit using stock photography..

Maybe give everyone the same sample shot and see what we can do from there? Just an idea.
*edit* Jlang beat me to it, d'oh!

I'd like to see it in the format where you choose one of your own pictures and show it before/after... sometimes if it's one picture for everyone it's not apicture that does anything for me, or inspires me to do anything with it.

    Sounds like good fun! :D

Maybe a theme such as Advertisment or Indusrtrial etc would be better than a stock photo?

    NEVER!!!

    Fair play man!
Anyway, maybe a poll to see what the theme should be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

I definitly think it should be for an advert of some sort... So that we actually have to work on getting something set up, rather than using a photo we already have put together!

Are we talking about straight out photo manipulation - ie taking different pictures to combine them, or using elements from one or two pictures in another final picture - or - are we talking about processing a single image using say photoshop - with no other pictures thrown into the mix ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭leinsterman

Great idea ... would like to see a rule that the original photo has to be your own ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,111 ✭✭✭tba

or at least royalty free and presented with the manipualted one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭elven

Hmmm I though part of the fun was having people shooting something for the purpose, then manipulating it. I think it should be just down to one picture as well. There are two types of manip and the one where you merge more than one picture is usually more of the digital art genre, where if you're enhancing/altering one picture it's at least limited to the, um, limits of that picture....

ok, I'm not even sure I undertsood that one. But maybe someone will get it.

    Right...A small proposal...

What if the theme were to be...

"Make me want to buy your..."

And we didn't use votes to decide what the *your...* is.

Then lay out a brief like, there has to be a suitable space for a logo, text etc etc... decided by one member who couldn't enter the contest. Just like a real like photo brief.

    Opinions?

And what does Rymus think of all of this?

I think whatever is seemed suitable for your image. Let it up to the artist!

@ Leinster man, I think it should be ones own photograph.

    how about..

Make advert for whatever you want, then u gotta go edit it in whatever way you like.. you can add/take away elements of it, u can do whatever you like in order for it to have the effect you want.

Like the ones seen here >> http://ziza.ru/2006/05/24/otlichnaya-podborka.html

    You may use stock photography.

and none of the images have to be yours but u can include your own if u like..

I don't think we should limit the ownership of the photography.

Then it will be in th digital art forum not here TBH.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭aFlabbyPanda

although I would be one of those who believes that this doesnt strictly belong in the photography section (unless it's repair/touch up/enhance/etc of a picture)

If you are going to have it as a contest then I would imagine that all sources should be allowed but either an initial theme (ie movie posters, front page of a mag, etc) or mandatory image should be provided (ie using this pic do whatever you want). That way there is a basis to rank everyone's work.
