Lovely City, and beautiful area in the summer months, be sure to see the Salt Mines take the Miner's journey, a marvellous and memorable trip. You can also do the tourist bit, and take a trip around the city in horse and tram, again kids love it and don't forget its full of Mozart and Sound of Music bits to see and do. Excellent Tourist Office in centre.

Also if you have time visit Berchtesgaden on the German border, Watzmann Mountains, Konigs See, - breathtaking scenery.

Salzburg/Berchtesgaden probably one of the nicest unspoilt scenic corners of Europe.

been there 3 times....on the first time, it poured down,
on the second time there was a tunderstorm and on the third time it was
a mixture of heavy downfalls interspersed with persistent drizzle. These were all
    in July and August.

Don't believe me ? Look at the climate chart on the Michelin European Atlas...along with Bergin,Norway - Salzburg is officially the wettest place you can be in Europe in July or August. Moving eastwards towards the Pannonian plains - the summer climate does get better.

So four raincoats would be essential packing. Other than that, its a nice town.

Absolutely lovely place, somewhere I hope to live someday.

There's a cable-car trip you can think into the Alps (I think!) that's not too far from the centre of town, and offers great views of the surrounding land. Mozart's house is also pretty interesting.

It also boasts a quite unusual Irish bar, Murphy's Law, which is built into a cliff - and the back of the pub is actually just a cave!

If it rains it really rains but for it to rain constantly for a few days you'd have to be very unlucky.

Foods are not all that different to Ireland. Pork and chicken or turkey are the main meats. Dumplings are quite popular as is various types of cabbages. Salads are also really good especially in the summer.

As has been said lots to do and see around there. Just outside of salzburg a lot of the bigger ski resorts run their lifts during the summer. It's a less stressful way of getting to the top of a mountain and the scenery is absolutely stunning. Alternatively you can probably drive a long way up a lot of the mountains and hike the rest of it.

If you have a car i'd recommend a trip to Halstatt and a ferry ride on the lake. The view of the town coming in from the lake is unreal. There's also ice-caves nearby in Obertraun but you'll need a fleece or something for those as it's about 2 or 3 degrees inside them! While there you can also take te gondel to the top of the mountain (there's a small glacier up there) which has wonderful views on a clear day. The gondel trip can be pretty pricey though (and to get to the ice caves you have to go half way up on the gondel)!

Go to the Augustiner beer cellar down by the river - great spot.
