DS-Friendly Routers

Just thought I'd try and start a list of wireless routers that the DS works fine with - might be helpful for people buying a router or replacing their crappy Eircom one :D

Generally, the DS Wi-Fi Connection is compatible with:
    • IEEE 802.11b wireless routers, gateways or "access points". 802.11g is fully backwards compatible, but many 11g products have a "g only" option which will not allow 11b devices to connect to them - so make sure that's not turned on when using a DS. Proprietry additions to the 11g standard like "Atheros Super G" and "125 High Speed Mode" should also be compatible. 802.11n "Draft" routers (the standard has not been finalised yet) technically should also be backwards compatible.
802.11a is not compatible at all - it uses a different frequency band to b/g/n.
    • No encryption or WEP. It is not compatible with WPA. However, Nintendo have reported that the Netgear RangeMax WPN824 works better with the DS when WEP is turned off - this may be true for some other routers as well.
    • MAC address-based access lists (i.e. a system on your router that only allows devices with specified MAC addresses to connect to it) - there's no reason why it shouldn't. To find out your DS' MAC address, go to Options -> System Information on the WFC Setup in a compatible game.
    • DHCP servers - most routers have the option to act as DHCP servers. If for some reason DHCP is not available on your wireless LAN, you will need to manually specify the IP addresses for your DS, gateway (this will be your wireless router's address), and DNS servers (you will need to find this out from your ISP or router's configuration) in the WFC Setup menu on your DS. Unfortunately, it appears the DS doesn't get on well with DHCP from some routers.

I'll try and keep this list updated with any new posts here:
    • Netgear DG834GT (ADSL modem/108Mbps Super G router) - connected straight away, no probs. Works with and without WEP, and a MAC address access list. DHCP works fine.
    • Netgear DG834G (ADSL modem/11g router)
    • Netgear WGR614 v4 (11g router/firewall) - WEP OK
    • Linksys WAG54GX2 (ADSL modem/MIMO router) - need to change base transmission rate to 1mb

Several people have experienced crappy or no compatibility with Eircom Netopia routers - avoid like the plague!
Zyxel routers usually supplied with Esat BT and Digiweb broadband (and anyone else?) are allegedly OK.

    http://www.nintendowifi.com/customersupport/routerSelect.do?manufacturer=D-Link&router=%2Frouters%2Fen%2FDI-514vB%2FDI-514vB.html

There is a list of compatble routers there but I'll put up my one anyway.

Netgear DG834G is wat I use.

That link doesn't work, but this one does - http://www.nintendowifi.co.uk/customersupport/supportedRouters.do (wait, actually it doesn't work either!)

Anyway, that list isn't that great - for starters it doesn't list either of our routers! And the US site won't list some routers sold in Europe due to different restrictions and stuff.

I'm using the Netgear WGR614(v4, whatever that does) at the moment; works perfectly well, WEP encryption etc etc.

I had connection issues with it before but since I moved back to Ireland that seems to have stopped, so it must have been the connection (or modem) I was using in England rather than the router itself...

Netgear DG834GT (modem/router) - connected straight away, no probs. Not using WEP, but I am using a MAC address access list. DHCP worked fine.

Using the same (with WEP enabled). Easy to connect and rock solid connection.

Works with Linksys WAG54GX2 - need to change base transmission rate to 1mb but that doesn't affect anything else as far as I can see...

Yeah there's no reason why the Nintendo Wireless thing won't work, though you'll have to have it on a different channel to your Netopia router (or just turn off the wireless thing on the router).

The DS/DS Lite can't handle WPA only WEP (or nothing)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭zilog_jones

Yeah, no WPA unfortunately. Though WEP hacking isn't as easy as people say - you need a specific 11b chipset, preferably 2 computers with this chipset, Linux, and it can take days to decode a strong WEP key.
