    I love margaritas, probably my favourite cocktail.... IF.... done properly.

    So basically I know you need tequila, triple sec and lime, and ice of course.

    I'd like some nice recipes that people use based on stuff avaiable here..

    When making margaritas for more than one person, ensure you have literally bowlfuls of lemons and limes. You need a sour mix to make margaritas. You can buy pre-mix stuff in the supermarkets, but I wouldn't know which Irish supermarkets supply it and where.

    I make my own - cold water, caster sugar, lemon juice and lime juice. Depending on how many people you're watering, mix equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan. Heat and stir until the sugar dissolves and you have a syrup. Allow to cool completely.

    Stir fresh squeezed lemon and lime juice through the syrup, taste testing all the while. As a guide, you'll need to measure the lemon/lime at about a half to two thirds volume of the syrup.

    Chill again until COLD, for use in margaritas and long island iced teas.

    The frosting around the top of a margarita glass is salt. Put a little lime juice in a shallow saucer. Upend your glass and put the rim of it into the juice, then into a shallow saucer of salt. It'll stick to the glass. Absolutely DO NOT use fine-grained table salt of the variety that comes in a plastic bottle with a flip top - you'll ruin the drink and poison yourself.

    Maldon sea salt is similar to kosher salt and works nicely to top margaritas, it's a light, flaky salt.

    There are a hundred and one different combinations of alcohol volume (and ingredients) for margharitas.

    I like mine to be in a ratio of 1.5 tequila : 1 triple sec : 3 sour mix, on the rocks, with salt all around the glass. Make em in a jug for consistency.

    I would have never considered lemons to be involved in margaritas.

    But it sounds like a worthwhile effort. Long Island ice tea is probably my second favourite cocktail - so i think i'll give the whole sour mix thing a go.

    There are a lot of different kinds of margarita - you can get blended margaritas with coconut or rapsberries. As a short drink, a margarita is tequila, triple sec and lime juice, nothing else.

    tequila makes the margarita. silver if you like a smooth margarita. my favorite recipe is:

    2 ounces 100% blue agave tequila (such as Herradura Silver)
    1 1/2 ounces Rose's sweetened lime juice (or fresh squeezed)
    3/4 ounce Cointreau
    Splash sweet-and-sour mix
    Fresh lime juice
    Kosher salt (optional)

    Superquinn sell it. I make margaritas out of roughly equal measures of tequila and triple sec and the juice of half a lime, served with a salt rim and the tiniest dash of salt in the glass. Probably not to everyone's taste.
