Audacity is great! I've used for years.

Make sure that you can see all the toolbars. On the Mixer toolbar the default is microphone, change it to "what U Hear" and that should do the trick.

The drop down menu give you a good number of ways of capturing sound.

Remember that to make MP3s you will need something like lame and audacity needs to know where the lame.dll is located.

If you want to only record what your speakers are playing, then all you have to do is use Creative MediaSource, which is a program you should already have. Then where it (in red letters) says "Rec," just click the drop-down arrow to the right of that, then go to "Select Recording Source," and then click on "'What U Hear'." Then start recording and it will record exactly whatever your speakers are putting out.
    Good luck

OP may not have a creative soundcard.
Another option is to do a loopback - connect the line out to the line in.

Hi I also use Audacity from time to time mine is version 1.2.4 and there is no "what you hear" anywhere to be found on mine.

However there is a drop-down menu with, Microphone, Aux, Phone etc. Choose "Wave Out Mix" from it and it will record whatever sounds your speakers are making.

Damn handy it is too. I have used it to digitise a few old Cassette albums I had and the quality is pretty good, (depending on the cassette and player quality) Now this music will live on forever in my iPod thank to Audacity and no need to buy the same thing again :)

Strange, I have 1.2.4 too and have the "what U hear".

Could be to do with the Sound card - Creative Labs Live 5.1

I dont have the "what U hear option" on my laptop (Sigmatel audio) but I have it on my desktop which has a Creative Audigy card, so it depends on the soundcard....

    Audacity FTW:)
