    What OS is on the kind of machines you want to conncect to the NAS? Do you want to use SAMBA?

    If you can, throw the drives in an old PC with good ventiliation. Setup linux such as clarkconnect on it. That way you have a lot more control over how the info is shared.

    This is/would be my choice.

    The OS isn't important, I've set up Linux and Samba before, so I'd have no problems doing that. Its going to be used as a backup to a windows server so its got to have some supported method of authentication.

    I'll check the other links though... cheers..

    I think a low spec machine with Linux, SAMBA & Either LVM's or hardware RAID would be best.

    That way you can control what drives go into it, what batches they came from and how well they are cooled.
