I've been playing poker for many years online now and have been on verge of going pro a few times and would have done so except being a married man got a wife to answer to, however I'm fed up of being a computer programmer and would love to work full time as a poker writer/reporter etc., anybody know of any position going, I already have got my own poker website firbolg.com where 80% of the articles are mine.

Anyway realise this is a shot in the dark but thought it was worth a go!
Thanks for any info in advance.

Why don't you write to some poker magazines and websites and show them your website and articles. Maybe you get lucky!

I'd probably get in touch with the AntesUp men Tom and Mike and see if they can help steer you on the right path.

Lucky... I think the first question you need to ask here is how much you need to earn. Writing poker articles... even if they're syndicated will not earn you a fortune. Even staff writers on magazines such as Card Player will only earn a relative pittance. Of course there are perks - such as you might be sent out to Vegas on field trips etc. It is worth talking to Tom and Mike about it - but I know that neither are well off men and they don't have the wife to answer to.

The Poker column that I do I do for love not money. [I do get paid but not my normal rate.]

But then again I am a professional writer first and a poker player second.

If the poker is going well enough and the writing is just to supplement your income then it might well work out for you.

In any event I wish you luck.

Cheers for the info so far,

At the minute I have enough of a bankroll to give going pro poker a shot and I think I could make it as have learned a lot of lessons including some painful ones over the last few years and would do so except I'm married and the wife ain't going to have it, personally I need to show a regular reasonable income for the next few months as we plan on getting a mortgage for a move abroad after that I should be able to work on my current website which already earns me a nice bit of extra income but of course it doesn't show up on any official records ;) - and a few more poker websites.

So my main thing is to show a reasonable income - (does not have to be huge as the type of property we would be looking at should not be too expensive i.e. < €100k) for the next few months - doing something that I like - if I thought I could stick out programming for the next few months I would do so - but at this stage I hate it so much I think it's even making me ill - hence some of you might remember I had to give up my seat in The Scottish Open - though of course that turned out well for me due To pppspecial's win :D

Yeah, good idea and good timing too actually.
I have heard from a very authoritative source that antesup.com are about to dump Tom Murphy, so you should apply for his job.

    Hi LuckyLucky,
I'm on the look out for people who would be interested in contributing to our magazine section of Poker.ie. This would in no means be a full time thing (far from it!), but maybe we could work something out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,437 ✭✭✭luckylucky

Cheers cianos, Interesting blog btw. i would be glad to contribute to your site but I guess it still leaves the critical problem for me, I need to show the bank a regular income if I am to get a mortgage in the next few months and I gather a regular income is not something you can offer at the moment.

Anyways aside from that I'll be glad to discuss doing articles for your site. meanwhile good luck with the $100K goal this year.

If you read Ben Grundys blog he mentioned recently that his dad was a mortgage broker who is arranging motgages for poker players.

To be honest, neither Mike nor I make diddly from our writing. It affords us an interesting amount of freedom to travel and covers the costs but you simply wont make a living from writing about poker without being a staff writer for something like Cardplayer or Bluff or their EU equivalents.

    DeV.

Well it looks like a full time poker writing position seems unlikely then - though I won't give up trying just yet, well all this might be the catalyst for me to finally put my money where my mouth is and give being a pro a shot and write articles for my own and other wesbites at same time, as staying in this day job is becoming unbearable.

In a few weeks time I am expecting to receive a little over €16K, probably just about enough to give it a decent shot - ironically enough the one thing that gives me a bit of confidence is that I have got badly burned a few times online so I'm under no illusion that my discipline is going to have to be watertight if I'm going to do it for a living, might even be a bit boring at times as I enjoy playing tournaments, pot limit omaha(just recently) as well as hold em cash games - but the only one of them where I actually have made any decent money is hold em cash games so going to stick to the latter virtually exclusively at least for the 1st few months.

To be honest one part of me is excited about it and the other part is nervous big time, but overall I'm hopeful.
Wish me luck if I do decide to give it a go! No doubt I'll have to live up to the luckylucky tag!;)

Thanks to Charlie McCreevy no doubt. He is giving me my gift in a few weeks too. Not too much of mine will go back into poker though, if any.

Lol, No not thanks to Charlie mcCreevy - saving money each month for 5 years was never likely to be a go'er 4 me

I had a sizable percentage of s.body who won a large large sum of money in a tourney recently so as soon as I get that forwarded to me I can truly decide whether to give going pro a go or not, have a lot to factor in whether I actually go ahead and do it or not but it's becoming more likely.

Wow I didnt know there was another use for money. Surely you're mistaken here and all the money will be put into the poker system?

It would be interesting to see just how much SSIA money is going to end up being raked in cardrooms and online. It might even effect the way we play and soon we will equal the scandies in loose aggressive notoriety.

You'd think wouldn't you but sadly not mine. There will be some left though for poker, but barely enough to cover entry into the PokerEvents Counties Cup or whatever it is called.
