    Hi Folks,

Just trying to settle an argument - can anyone tell me if using images instead of css/text for links and site navigation, is better for SEO? and any reasons why/why not?

    Thanks

Text is usually better as it's easier for a spider to read...

    Hi yeraulone,

This article may be of some help to you.
    http://www.successful-sites.com/archive/014-image-links-03-17-2005.htm

A lot of the time it comes down to a matter of personal taste. Don't forget that it is very easy to use CSS to make text links look like buttons. They are pleasing to the search engines and, most importantly, to your visitors.

Here is another link to a site that uses CSS to make text links look like buttons http://www.raisemyrank.com/

    Hope that helps.

Text links probably very important because anchor text is considered a vital part of Page Rank algorithm.

Thanks for all your replies folks.

I had thought that text links were the way to go, but I just wanted to be sure. I'll read up on those links as well.

    Cheers

Images take up a lot more space, eating up disk and monthly transfer if you've a hosting account, plus the mobile web is coming fast so lightweight is better.
Also if you want to add new buttons either you'd have to do a new graphic or use a server-side graphics library to generate it.
So another vote here for <ul> and css.

I have to agree with you on this one. The images aren't of great quality, but CSS has the potential to provide designers the option of avoiding expensive disk and monthly transfer bills whilst allowing anchor text to be used.

Just an example... but I'm sure there are many better ones out there.
