Playing music in shops?

Does anyone know what the deal is with having music playing in a shop?
I know there is a license needed, but avoiding paying that would be fantastic.
If it's not music that you have playing, simply the radio, is a license still required? Or even if the music is stuff you have composed yourself?

AFAIK, you have to pay a fee to IMRO who will then collect it and try as hard as possible not to pay the royalties to the respective artists. If the music is not copyrighted, in the public domain or performed by someone not represented by IMRO, you're laughing.
