External Hard Drive Question

I'm thinking about getting a laptop and getting rid of my desktop PC. I have a second HDD on my PC which is 200GB. If I got an 200GB external hard drive and transferred everything from my current internal HDD on my PC onto the 200GB external HDD would I need high spec on the laptop in order to use the external HDD on the laptop?

    Thanks in advance!

you will not need a high spec laptop to use the external drive.

the only problems - if you can call them that - are how you are going to power the external drive.

now when you're saying a 200gig external drive that would be a 3.5 inch drive which will require a plug to power the drive.
as long as you're okay with transporting the laptop and the external drive then it's ok, but it was just something i figured should be mentioned.

Thanks for that. It's not going to be for another few months anyway if I choose to change over to a laptop.

    Cheers!

I went from using Firewire external Lacie units to Buffalo external NAS units and haven't looked back since.

The Buffalo's let you connect as if they were a server share, and run quiet and cool. I could fry eggs on my old Lacie drives.

Yep just got something from Komplett, USB 2.0 is what you are looking for. I have a Maxtor One Touch 160GB and a WD 120GB. They are fairly reasonably priced.

If you are getting rid of the old one, just get an enclosure and stick the HD into it. Would cost you about ~€35 or so.
