ok,have my main pc running winxp pro, wanna set up a file sharing and internet sharing network with my media pc...running win xp media center edition.

my problem is that i cannot gain access to my main pc as i dont have the right permissions....i figure its a win xp pro thing!

are there any patches out there or where do i alter these settings???

oh, and to be clear, i can see the files on my media pc thru my main pc, but not vice versa.....

Right click on the shared drive on the main PC, and go into sharing. Does Everyone had read permissions by default?

Can you access the main PC files from the media PC if you use \\main_pc_name\letter_of_shared_drive$

    e.g. \\mainPC\C$

    everyone has permissions....

just typed \\sarah\e$ into the address bar and nothing came up.....

error when i click on my main pc in 'view my workgroup computers' \\sarah is not accesable.you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact admin to find out if you have access permisxsions

logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer

i have the guest account on on my main pc...

If it's not even letting you enter a user/pass then try doing this on the pc you can't access.
    start>>run>>gpedit.msc
Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment >>
In here, look for "Access this computer from the network"... see who's got access... you can either add the "Everyone" group or the specific user name.
("Everyone" should be in there by default.)

Worked for me a few months ago when I was having similar problems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

interesting....there is no one there.....what should i add?? the ip of the htpc???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,145 ✭✭✭DonkeyStyle \o/

Stick in "Everyone" ... or just open up the group policy editor on the pc you can access and copy what's there.
There should be a list of user groups present on the pc that's accessable.

Or if the other pc is media center edition and it doesn't have gpedit (not sure tbh never used it)... what I've got in mine is "Everyone,ASPNET,Administrators,Users,Power Users,Backup Operators"... that's the default for mine, but I'm still using XP-SP1... so not sure if they changed any of that for SP2.
Should just work with "Everyone" though, I think the everyone group encompasses the others... not 100% on that though.

there are 6 things in the pc i can access,ie the htpc
    they are Administrators;aspnet;backup operators;everyone;power users;users

i added everyone to my list on my main pc, and it came up wiuth

failed to save local policy database

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,145 ✭✭✭DonkeyStyle \o/

Sounds like something else in your local policy could be buggered.

Hmmm, after some googling on the matter, it seems a lot of people are having that problem with very little success.
I came across one post with two interesting looking links on the problem though...
    http://www.1-script.com/forums/Re-An-extended-error-has-occurred.--Failed-to-save-Local-Policy-Database.-article940-19.htm
That's if you want to get your hands dirty and/or trust the information posted.

Looks like a dirty bastard of a problem, but I think you're at least on the right track.

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
    "restrictanonymous"="0"

Save the above as a reg file(easy) and apply or modify the registry manually(harder).

Copy what zuma wrote above (barring the instructions, of course) into a text file, and change the extension to .reg. Then double click it to add the information to the registry.

    ok...done....now what?

    Try connecting?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 640 ✭✭✭CraggyIslander

Make sure that 'simple file sharing' on the xp pro box is off (windows explorer / tools / folder options) view tab, scroll down and make sure the 'use simple filesharing (recommended)' is unticked.

is there a password set on the accounts you are logged in with on both pc's?

no dice with the reg entry.

    have simple file sharing off

no passwords set on either account

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,126 ✭✭✭✭calex71

passwords are the problem i think , set a password on the accounts and then try to access using \\computername\c$ as mentioned earlier

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

nope still wont connect..says check spelling

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,145 ✭✭✭DonkeyStyle \o/

Mmm, it really shouldn't say that... try replacing computername with the IP address of the other pc, does the job when the netbios name can't be found for some reason.
Also did you try those links yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

no havent tried the links yet.... will try the ip now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

ok so ive been trying what is in the links, but the first one is just a microsoft page that tells me to run a file that i do not have, and the second one is incomplete!!!! im stuck here at step 11 and ive no idea what to do next!!!!!

    heres the link

ok i just winged it and i think its ok now.......so when i try to login from my htpc a login screen pops up!!!

connect to Sarah.....user name: sarah/guest (this is not changeable!)
    Password.......

so i look in my main pc for the password for the guest account and i see that it is off....so i change that.....then try to login again and i get that login error again!!!

Where is the password...what is the password

after doing some serious googling, i found out that SP2 is causing some headaches with networking....

its certainly causing me a headache!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭zilog_jones

Are they both running SP2? I've seen serious weirdness happen when connecting SP1 to SP2 macines.

Also, try creating the same users on both the PCs (with the same passwords and suitable permissions), or did you already do that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

both have sp2 and both users are the same on both machines!

Total long-shot but hey it could be worth a try.

There is a program called Network Magic which was created by former Microsoft network developers.

What may be interesting to you it is supposed to be able to clear up these sorts of problems your having in order to make the sharing process as streamlined as possible. They have a demo version that you could install on both PC's and see if it can work any mojo on them and get it working.

Might do nothing and it might fix it if it does try un-installing the program and see if sharing still works without password prompts.

As for the issue at hand I've no idea whats causing the problem I have my WinXP SP2 machine on a network with a WinXP SP2 MCE 2005 machine sharing files between them and all I had to do was enable file sharing & that was it (no passwords on admin accounts either).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

im checking out that program now......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

    talk about a longshot!!

    IT WORKED!!!!!!

Oh my god im so happy!!!!!
Thank you soooooooooo much for all your help everyone!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 640 ✭✭✭CraggyIslander

the sarah/guest username does indicate the simple file sharing. But whatever fixed it am glad it worked..... wahtever it was;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭sarahn11

just an FYI: i tried uninstalling the network magic and low and behold....i get the dreaded login box......

so i reinstalled it, do you reckon it will hold out??? its only a 30 day trial of the premium.....

Guess we will see after 30 days!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,757 ✭✭✭8T8

Cool glad to hear it worked out for you

Edit: In reply to post above, I guess it restores whatever the settings were after un-installing, wait & see what happens after 30 days is a good idea you can always buy it if it doesn't work out I guess (or cannot find a solution to the original problem).
