BTW even backing up DVD's you own is on shaky ground in Ireland. If you own the copyright however, its not an issue.

Like, say, holiday video's, and such.

An easy way with your holiday videos and such is to use VOB2MPG which will convert the VOB files on your DVD into a single .mpg file containing the movie, you can then feed this with a minimum of fuss to various programs to convert into another format.

If your looking for MPEG-4 ASP (think XviD) try AutoGK, or for MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) use MeGUI (requires .NET 2.0 installed).

I got it, if anyone wants to know i used dvd decryptor to put it onto the hd, then auto autogk to make a single avi and then videora to convert to mp4, takes about five hrs altogether, but you can queue up jobs.

One wonders how you managed to encrypt your home videos without the knowledge of how to back them up :)

    Why were they encrypted?

Use Nero AVC in the future(Nero Recode)....the best MPEG2 -> MP4 converter out there.

Have to disagree, while very easy to use it doesn't support the high profile in H.264 whereas MeGUI with x264 does and MeGUI has come a long way and is now very straight forward to use. With the profiles available you can encode to a wide variety of targets and I can barely tell the difference between the original DVD and the HQ profile encoded movies I've done.

Just wondering in the above mentioned process do you loose 5.1 sound? What ive done in the past is make dvd's into image files (clone dvd) and play them over the lan on which ever pc using a virtual drive.

If you mean with MeGUI ?

Not if you choose to keep the original AC3 file and just re-encode the video that should keep the 5.1 audio intact. MeGUI is very flexible and supports a variety of codecs, there is a brief description of some of the audio codecs at this unofficial wiki.

The Nero AAC audio encoder which can be used with MeGUI can also downmix and upmix to multi-channel audio.

However H.264 encoding can take some time my Athlon 64 4400+ takes on average 5-6 hours to do the encode with the HQ-Slow profile though there are much faster profiles that will substantially lower the encode time but I'm aiming for max quality.

The easiest and hassle free way of backing up DVD's is by using two programs, AnyDVD and CloneDVD, both available from www.slysoft.com

I've been using them for years and have an... impressive DVD collection!..

agreed, Slysoft products are simple interfaces, have also been using for years, Clone DVD2, is better than the newer version, you may get data read errors but these will be because of damaged discs
you could also try dvdXcopy, not as good as clonedvd but not bad
best thing about all of these guys is the simplicity if clicking a few buttons

Slysofts stuff may be great, but it not much use to the OP! He was looking for somthing that converts to Mp4
