Just wondering how do you tell if a hurl is a good one or if theres any signs of quality one should look for when buying one.

Hard to know without getting your hands on it, generally speaking the grain should curve with the Boss and it shouldnt be as thick as a 2 x 4

it should be well balanced with a tight even grain curving around the bas. Try get one who's handle matches the size of your grip - too thin and it will twist, too thick and it's uncomfortable. i prefer getting one with a bit of extra weight at the bas for sideline cuts etc. and i normally take a spokeshave to the toe to thin it out a little.

some people i know look at the flexability of the hurl . imo you'd know a good hurl the minute you grab a hold of it!!

I bought a McNaughton hurley recently, it broke after about 4 whacks.

I agree with the above; check the grain... if there are any flaws in the grain, like if it changes direction or doesn't flow with the shape of the bás then its more likely to bust.
I like to check the spring too, just hold the hurley with the bás on the ground and lean gently on it to make sure it's got a good flexibility to it. You need it to be good a springy.... If it breaks whilst carying out this test; leave the shop at a good pace! :p

You can't tell without giving a bit of a swing, bend it to vheck the spring, check the grain and look at the price. Buy yourself a sweet grip then. :)
