Data while Abroad

Off to france for a few weeks soon. My PDA has a traffic update facility that uses GPRS to alert of road traffic jams etc. And I also want to check email.

Rather than pay the expensive data roaming charges (I don't use the SIM I have as a phone, data only).

Anyway, as I don't care about the mobile number, can I just stroll into a French mobile operator and buy a ready-to-go equivalent and avail of local french data tarriffs.

    N'est ce pas?
