VOIP Service Provider Query

    Hi,

I live in Wales, my father lives in Waterford.

I want to get myself an Irish non-geo number that I can receive via IAX2 or SIP here in Wales. (I am running Asterisk)

I tried signing up to one Irish provider but was told I wasnt allowed from a foreign IP.

Would anyone sign up a free account for me and send the details?

Also, how much will it cost my father to call a non-geo from his Irish PAYG mobile.

    Thanks,

    Sean

What exactly did you do? I've connected to Irish VoIP providers from abroad as I'm sure many others have too. There's no such limitation implemented. Try another provider, lots of them.

An 076 number should be charged as a local call.

Not heard of any IP range limitations with any of the providers yet, I've seen some postings on adslguide.org that suggest UK users are using blueface.ie,

Perhaps try and register with them?
    failing that try smart076.ie

"yet"? It's a completely braindead way to do things as it prevents people from roaming and IP address to geo mapping is far from accurate, particularly in Ireland with all the US multinationals and NTL users, every VoIP providers primary target market, appears as the UK.

I agree, recently I noticed Valve match your country IP to your payment address when buying games from Steam.

Unfortunately for me this meant that when I tried to buy HL2 Ep1 from steam it matched by Irish billing address against my NTL UK IP so it wouldn't process the payment, luckily I have access to a backup BT Business line so I got it sorted easily.

When I reffered to providers, I was just including VoIP providers ;)

On the other hand I presume you can access BBC's streaming content that's limited to the UK users using IP address mapping?

    Hmm never tried... :D
Something has changed recently though, as before when I logged into gmail it used to say GoogleMail on the logo (due to this ruling - http://www.marketingvox.com/archives/2005/10/20/google_to_rename_gmail_google_mail_in_uk/) but recently its reverted back to GMail.

Must give the BBC thing a try when I get the chance,

If you try to register at freespeech.ie from a non Irsh IP address, you get this message:
Sorry, we can't complete your registration as we have detected you are attempting to register from outside Ireland. As subscription to this service includes an 076 number it is a requirement you must be normally be resident in Ireland OR otherwise establish genuine and specific reasons why a number or numbers from the Irish numbering plan should be allocated to you. It is in contravention of the Irish Communications Regulatory body directives to subscribe to an Irish 076 VoIP number if you do not meet one of these conditions.

Contact info@freespeech.ie if you have any questions concerning registration.

(Anyone working for a multinational that access the 'net through a proxy server in the US will see this message, for example).

Blueface are another VOIP provider in Ireland, they have a similar legal text in their terms of service

    http://www.blueface.ie/corporate/termsofservice.aspx
"Customers purchasing products that include Ireland 076 VoIP numbers acknowledge that they are normally resident in Ireland or have a strong and genuine link with Ireland. It is in contravention of the Irish Communications Regulatory body directives to subscribe to an Irish 076 VoIP number if you do not meet one of the above conditions. "

My understanding of the above would be that you could sign up as you do have a strong link with Ireland ......ie your father living here.

Alternatively your father could sign up to one of their pay as you go accounts and you could occasionally top it up for him.
