I put MEMs on my CAO and I was just wondering what the general opinion of i was by students. It looks like a good course, mix of engineering and Business but it has really low points for Trinity....350-ish. So if anyone could offer me an insight into it I would be most greatful

Don't be put off by low points. My course (comp sci) had low enough points - its purely the CAO system being silly, rather than anything else.

I know but it seems like it SHOULD be a bit higher no? Also is it similiar to engineering and would I be able to transfer if I am good enough at the end of the first year?

points are just an indication of popularity, by lc students, who really have no iota what any college course is like, so really should just be ignored.......

Hello, was just glancing thru the boards and saw your post. I'm actually a second year MEMS student, hopefully soon 2 be third pending results :P But anyways, first off, the low points for the course are meaningless. Any engineering course is tough and this one is just as tough as general engineering in Trinity, if not tougher compared to civil etc. ;) The points started out low for this course because during its first year it was not advertised properly and thus suffered a continuous trend of lowish points in the following years. (the course is only in its 5th year i think) However it's picking up.

As for the course itself, it's a good course, but a difficult one. What I mean by difficult is if you want to do well you're going to have to study a lot. First year was ok, a few boring subjects, but it's par for the course - you just have to get thru that 'introductory' year, and in fact pretty much all of the subjects you do are shared with general engineering bar one or two.

Second year is much better, I found it to be much more interesting. Don't know too much bout third and fourth year. Though I do know you share a lot of subjects with mech eng. But you specialise more as you go on, which makes things more interesting, and at least in fourth year you can choose most of your subjects.

As for the business/management side of the course, it is easier than the engineering side, pay a little attention in lectures and u can do well. And it's actually interesting. More and more engineers are going for masters in business/management so you're ahead of the game in doing it in your degree.

As for manufacturing engineering, I've found that it is basically a more in-depth mechanical course, with some technology and stuff about materials and design thrown in so far. :) It's pretty broad so I can't see ppl having problems finding jobs with this course.

Another thing is the size of your class, it's pretty small so it's easy to get to know ppl and you stay for them for the whole 4 years which is nice. And the course itself is small so you can get to know the ppl in years ahead of you.

Info was a bit all over the place but I hope that helped, if you still have any questions post em here and I'll keep an eye on the thread. Best of luck with the LC. :)

Interestingly, MEMS will be changed from Manufacturing Engineering with Management Science to Engineering with Management in 2007/8. Emmm...Emmm.... nah, doesn't really have the same ring to it.

er as regarding the above post(before donal's) , isn't engineering non-denominational for 1st n 2nd year, so comparing directly civil doesn't make sence?

Civil is always reported as being the 'easy' option, so I assume that's what she meant :)
