Ok, hope i am explain myself clearly. Here goes, I have a two phone line sockets in my new house, one upstairs and one downstairs. The downstairs phone line was connected when we moved in when i joined eircom however after buying a new phone for upstairs as we can not hear the phone from downstairs when we are there, i plugged in the handset and the phone connection only for it not to work. There is no dial tone and i can not either make or recieve calls upstairs, only the phone downstairs works. So i called Eircom and they informed me that the phone line upstairs has not been activated...they will not do it as they only look after the main line.when i asked how to activate it she said she would orginise a eircom contractor to come out at a cost of €70! I asked is it a switch that they flip to turn on the upstairs phone socket she said no it is simple wireing work. I dont fancy paying nor do i have €70 for a contractor to come out and do 5 mins work(apperantly according to Eircom this is how long it takes to set up!)Plus i am not in the house during working hours and do not wish to take a day off for a 5 minute job to be done! Can anyone please tell me how i can do this myself or when i can look up how to do it. Any info appriciated. Please help...completly lost on this one!
    Thanks in advance!

You need to find where the upstairs line goes to, I imagine it's in your hall somewhere. If it's a new house it might be sticking out of the ceiling somewhere in a ring of white cable in which case you will need to connect it to the little white Eircom box where the line comes in, or in an older house a brown Telecom Eireann one.

you can find diy extension kits in the large hardware store, like woodys, electrical cable section.look round for square plastic box on wall ,12iinchs from floor, not esb box, 4x4inch approx, open it, find phone cable, 4 wires , 2 maybe blue ,white carry phone signal, connect to a phone extension socket, inside socket, you can try all wires if you are not sure ,or use meter.on main eircom socket, terminal white, 8 connections, connect 2 extension wires to opposite connectors ,simmilar position, inside socket,terminal/box.strip 2 wires back half inch for connection, same 2 wires as go upstairs, use a small wire stripper,or small knife.strip insulation, half inch.look round for a juction box, white ,where the phone comes in.

Carefully open the socket that works. You may find the end of another telephone wire just coiled up inside the box not connected to anything. This probably goes to the second phone outlet. If its there, carefully connect the same coloured wires in the spare cable to the existing working connectors. They other socket should now be live. If it's not, open the second socket and move the coloured wires about so that the same colours are attached to the same terminals as the working ones.

Leaving sockets disconnected like this is sometimes a bit of a scam to generate nixers.:(
