Afaik they are not made anymore so I think you'd be limited to the second hand market.

Have you a fear of ebay and paypal?

    yes

Don't be. As long as you use some common sense and only go for established sellers with good feedback from users that have been around a while you'll be ok. And if there is a problem paypal has methods of getting ur money back.

If in doubt post some of the ads on the Online Auction forum and ask people for their opinion on whether it looks dodge or not.

It's a wireless (802.11b) card. With an external antenna connector.

With a decent MMDS dish or specialised antenna at each end you can get a 11Mbps link over 8Km. With faster cards you may not be able to simply because they won't accomodate signals that take longer because they have further to go ( radio waves don't travel instantly )

If it has a PCMCIA slot chances are you can get drivers for it for this card.

The special thing with the Proxim Orinoco Gold Classic's is that they have a very good radio which is why they're popular with the WAN folks. And it's supported by Linux.

Yip, they have a sensitive radio ,some other cards seem to have been fitted with cotton wool instead of electronicky stuff they are so deaf.
What made them nice was you could upload firmware to the cards RAM as they were booting, allowing them to become an AP. So you now had a linux/bsd powered AP with a sensitive radio ( the AP has to 'see' the other side too).
Proper APs ( some of which featured the same card embedded) were scarce and expensive and others wouldn't work reliably over distance or at all.

Hmm wonder if this would work as an Airport Extreme with OS X?

Yea I was a bit dubious about NutJobs claim. I know you can go from silver to gold as I have one of those cards, but it's still only b type.

    No it doesn't.

They can indeed be upgraded (inconveniently), but the upgrade is
to give you 128 bit encryption. The silver only handled 64bit, which
means it can't connect to many modern APs.
The radio is still an 802.11b radio - 11Mb/s. Can't upgrade that in software.

turns out the Airport Extreme is a broadcom chipset, so no go there.
