Im looking to completely restrict a laptop, Im assuming its in user settings but what my friend needs is 2 users, one with complets access to the pc, this aint a problem. User 2 however has to have access to one application only, no internet no office no c drive etc.

Go into the control panel and then users. Your options are all there ;)

That will only prevent the user from installing programs, but not from using any programs installed already.

you will prob need to set a security policy for user 2. However I don't think this feature is available in Win XP Home, only in Pro. Not too familiar with Policies. You might get a better response in the Windows forum. I imagine Capt'N Midnight would give you an answer.

IF XP pro you can set it using Local Security Settings in the Administrative Tools folder you need to be very careful though.

I would definitely recommend reading through the functions of each setting and the access rights already in existencxe before changing anything.

Also check out some Windows forums for more in depth advice.

Keywords you need to google for are 'kiosk' and 'group policy'

The Group policy plugin can be found on a Windows Pro/Server machine through mmc.

    The .msi at
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=354b9f45-8aa6-4775-9208-c681a7043292&displaylang=en
contains docs and some kiosk sample scenarios.

Mostly this is used with active directory and servers so some of the docs might be a little complex. Care to be taken that you don't lock out everyone. Also default will prevent user from logging in and out/ shutdown, so maybe the taskstation scenario would be better.

If your friend is just looking to lock out a parent/brother/sister, might just be easier to add a batch file to kill the explorer process and autostart the app at login. You'd still be able to restore by ctrl-alt-del/run/explorer.

Thanks guys theres some good replies there. I probably should have explained it better, it will be a pc that many people have to use to input scores, and that is what he wants it blocked to do for them, just input the scores and nothing else, including shutting down/logging off etc.

Thanks for the replies will keep ye posted on how it goes, because it sounds simple, like anti, but Ive found out quickly enough that it isnt

download a program called tweakUI and use that, also depending on the OS things can be removed from start menu etc

GPEDIT.MSC - if you have windows pro ( not home )

"XP Home has no policies so GPEdit.msc wont work" - this seems to be true even if you hack XP home to PRO ( don't because the you won't be able to repair the bastard os afterwards )

If you like trawling through registry keys you can get most of the Group Policy functionality into XP Home :(
