Just back from 5 days in Scotland.

    Carnoustie 81
Glenegales Kings Course(from the tips!) 85
    Whitekirk 78
and most importantly 79 at St Andrews....I was 2 under for the back nine going into the famous road hole and drop a shot on 17 and 18 to shoot par for the back 9....if it had not been for a terrible choice on the front I that led to a triple and one duff I could have got around in 74 or 75.

I truly enjoyed myself and I love Scotland golf and it apparently loves me.

Super Shooting P&P... Not to focus on the negative, but just out of curiosity, but what happened on the front 9? What hole was it and what decision were you faced with? What should you have done differently?

Again, not trying to take you back to that dark place but I always find listening to people's thought processes during an important part of a round very interesting.

I would be interested in how much that trip cost overall?

Was this a package deal or did you pay for each course seperately ?
If so how much was it to play at St Andrews.

I'd just like to point out that 'WigerToods' is by far the best Username in this section. Ha! Cracks me up everytime I see it. Very Good Sir...

How about Mil Phikelson?? Or Ernie Els even... no, wait - that wouldn't work...

This one is easy....I was playing good...got to the 9th and was talking to the caddies and we were reminiscing about last years open when Tiger drove over the hole with a 3 wood from 354....The hole was playing 305 and I turned to the caddie and my playing partners and Said "What do you think, should I give it a lash?" , So I put the 4 iron back in the bag and took out the driver....absolutely crushed it, but pulled it...Played a provisional and ended up taking a triple on the par 4. That cost me 3 strokes on what should have been a relatively easy par.... other than that i played well and just missed a few greens and a few key putts.(par that hole and I go 40, 36 for a 76)

    Played separately.

Carnoustie was 125, st Andrews was 120, Whitekirk was 40(played late afternoon), Gleneagles was 40(played after 5pm) vs paying 125 during the day.

B&B cost me 30pound/nite(only way to go..hotels are well over 100), golf about 300pound, flight was 60euro(ryanair) - took my clubs 60 addtnl euro, I rented a car 114pound. Petrol(two fillups) 50 pound, and food( i indulge, so not the same for every1).

Rent a car...makes getting to places very easy. Scotland road system is very ez to manage and maps and signage is spot on.

Book Carnoustie. Book Gleneagles for 5pm-5:30pm in the summer....we were done in 3:45 and saved 80pound. I prebooked both courses and turned up for the other two....there are so many other good courses that you can decide when you are there and give them a try.

Take your clubs........the cost of taking your clubs vs the cost of renting is less...and if you are going to play courses like that you should be comfortable hitting the clubs.

I got to St Andrews at 6:15 am and was 5th on the waiting list....got out with 3 other singles at 8:10am when a fourball cancelled.

I did two morning rounds and two afternoon rounds so as to not be totally worn out. This way I could rest and also sleep in and see other sites too.

Muirfield only allows visitors on Tues and Thurs, so unfortunately I did not get to play there.

Erm...rain gear of course! A camera. And a great attitude....I enjoyed every minute, no matter what happened...Bad shot, rain, hunger.

What a trip well worth the money.
Have normally gone to spain for the same all round price but with much less in the way of the quality of golf.

    @Greenhorn
    Cheers
seemed liked an appropiate name for this forum :D:D

    Hi,

    Interesting thread.

My father is 60 this October and I've organised for a group of us to head away on a surprise trip to Villamoura. I had originally targetted St Andrews but decided aganist it as a venue after visiting their website and reading that rounds had to be booked 10 months in advance by way of an application form and that even then you could not be guaranteed a round as the draw for tee-times takes place the evening beforehand!

So my question is: did you pre-book with St. Andrews before you travelled or did you just turn up very early on the morning in question and take a chance on there being a cancellation? And how many of the group you travelled with managed to get out? We have approx 8 travelling so would hate for only 2/3 of us to make it and the others miss out.

    Thanks a million.

So you have two options. You go the day before you want to play and enter the ballot. They draw a certain amount of tee times every day(Sat for Monday)......SO this is just luck.

What I did was show up early(before 6am) and waited until their were cancellations....There was a fourball cancellation and four singles got put together. So the problem is you have to take the slot when it comes up...there were three guys ahead of me who had to go separate(2 and 1) because if a two ball comes up to the tee they put you with them. So again probably not the best way....

The only other way is to pay the rip off prices of golf travel groups.

    Good Luck whatever you do.
