HP-UX backup to DAT:- inconsistent duration query

    Hi,
Ran the backup procedure twice using previously used DD3 tapes and got very consistent results, backup 5G in about 60mins.

However, after using 2 new DD3 tapes, 5G took 120mins for tape 1 and 205 mins for tape 2,

Any ideas what is going on?

Do I need to do anything to new tapes before I use them?

    Cheers

I know nothing about HP-UX, but maybe it's not the OS.

I always ask the dumb questions first - it it possible the backup is being affected by disk access / applications running ?

We had issues with two differen 72GB DAT drives. A HP drive couldn't read tapes backed up using an IBM drive. Turned out to be a block size issue.
Can you check the block sizes used on the new and old tapes? It doesn't explain the time difference on the two new tapes, but might be a starting point.

    Sorry, probably not much help.
