    Hello

I use satellite broadband, and I noticed today that my desktop which is connected to LAN port on my router keeps causing problems regarding internet explorer, I for the most of the day could not connect to any internet sites, yet programs such as msn messenger and limewire connected fine. My laptop is wirelessly connected to the router and is connecting to everything fine. Is there a setting or something I have to change on my desktop?

    Please help..

Try in Internet Explorer, Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN Settings and tick the Automatically detect settings box. Im not sure if that will do it or not though.

Do you use the Zonealarm firewall ?

Is that a specific program, or is it a firewall on the system....

    If its a program, no.

    ZoneAlarm
is a free and well-reputed virus protection program.

I dont know if you have any other browsers installed, if so do they work? If not, you could try Firefox, a free browser, which runs much faster than IE. When installing though, just don't import your IE settings (if you can be parted from your bookmarks) and the default ones should work.

    www.getfirefox.com

If you wanna stick with IE, you could try reistalling - it's a free download from the Microsoft website if you don't have it on disk.

Zonealarm is a troublesome firewall that can sometimes cause the problem you describe but seeing as you don't have it then that rules that out.

Try WinSock fix and see if anything improves (probably wont but just in case something is up with the TCP/IP sub system).

Help us to help you. What exactly are you doing? What is the EXACT error you are seeing? What software do you have running on the desktop, other than Internet Explorer?

When you find a site that cannot be accessed, open up a command prompt (Start->Run and type in cmd and press enter). A black box should appear. In that black box, enter ping <sitename> obviously replacing <sitename> with the name of the site you want to contact (e.g. ping www.ireland.com).

Let us know how you get on.

Could have been a PEBTAC issue also.

Prob best to run a scan for spyware and virus to make sure nothing is causing the intermitten loss of web browsing. I assume you tried restarting PC when problem first presented itself?
