Ok i know piss all about becoming a wildlife ranger in this country or is it even a full time job, what it pays etc. If anyone could point me in the direction of some info i'd greatly appreciate it. My bro has just quit his current job and would love to do it.

Dunno about wildlife rangers...maybe something with An Taisce ?

These rangers look like they have some nice toys though:

(Have to be a serving member of the Defence Forces though before you can apply for consideration.)

    Dont bother!!
There is a recruitment ban on at the moment on new civil servants, and the dept has a backlog of hopefuls already to fill the gaps.It it the usual WHO you know not WHAT you know after that.Unless you like sitting in an office alot pushing paper from the IN to the OUT tray, and going off to the oded coursing meeting to have your ears filled by ICABS members about hares being captured illegally.I could think of better career moves in Ireland.Plus a major disadvantage to you is you like shooting ,and hunting and know somthing about the job.A totally unsuitable backround.
If ,however you were a gay colord, college trained in the preservation of some type of obscure micro flora[read shower curtain mould],that exists out in the middle of nowhere, but is endangerd.Know how to shovel paper, and are totally antigun and hunting. You will be the man ,woman ,or creature of dubious gender for the job![Apologies if you are any of the above].
Sorry to urinate on your parade.:(

Lass I used to work with's other half was a ranger.

The job he was doing definately was one for a shooter as well..

He spent several months on the midlands doing night shifts watching a nest of some rare ground-nesting bird or other & bagging anything that looked sideways at the eggs in the nest :-)

On the other hand his Missus used to tell us stories of how she had 50-60 Ferret corpses in her freezer which he was storing as part of the 3rd Level Degree/Doc he was working on. Have to say that apart from the fact that he didnt get to spend enought time with his family, the job sounded interesting to me too !

They were hiring about two years ago - competition was meant to be fierce and there were supposedly 1000's who applied for it.

Contact Duchas for more info I'd say.

From what I can gather and from people I 'know' in the job they seem to be looking for the bookish type as Clare gunner says - although they are most definitely into their shooting.

From time to time I've had them called out when I'm out with the hounds - usually by Brits who don't realise that they're no longer in england
I don't think the job is as interesting as a lot of people think - at least you get out and about sometimes.
