    Which is better a chunky P4 (say, 3.2 / 3.4 Ghz) or a Pentium D?
Been pricing some machines on the Dell outlet store, just not sure what the performance difference is?
The machine I'm looking for needs to be pretty quick - going to be used for rendering.

well, pD is dual core. so if it's say 3.0Ghz wouldnt that be each core at 3.0Ghz. more power anyway if you can optimise it.

What is this forum coming to? The man mentioned Dell and not a single rant about shoddy customer service or bad build quality. When did the internet get so nice and relaxed?

Oh I'm sure SeanW will be along shortly with his regular Anti-Dell rant. ;)

Humble apologies kind sirs, I beg your forgiveness for mentioning the d_e_l_l word :)

To be honest I went straight to dell 'cos it's for my brother who is kinda clueless about any kind of tech. He has a dell at the moment so he wants to stick with what he knows.
He's also in a hurry so....

If it'll dampen the flames, I'm going to get the RAM from Crucial :)

Meh, I personally dont really care. If they dont know the difference between a Dell compared to a decent build then its not my problem.

It really depends on the rendering software which will be used. If the software only runs in a single thread then a single core P4 at a higher speed will run it quicker. If it's multi-threaded than even a slower clocked dual core will run it much faster. Also, even if it's only single-threaded now, there's a good chance of a future update making it multi-threaded, so all around the dual core is probably the best bet.
