I'm looking to download some legal stuff using torrents and i'm completely new to it, i know the basics:

    Sign up at torrent site
    Download torrent
    Import torrent into torrent prog
    Download file

I know about port forwarding but i'm afraid it might **** up something, is port forwarding safe and easy to do? Can it have an effect on your normal broadband speed?

Any info is greatly appreciated :)

Portforwarding is safe. If you are not using a router then you dont need to do it.

www.portforward.com will answer the rest of your questions.

I think that people should not be given free handout-help with regards certain things in computing.
That they should have a self-solving cypher, as it were.
Only those smart enough to know how to use it, will be able to use it.

not that bt is actually difficult to set up...

3.4 volts with a crossflow fan blowing air onto them, can do 1.5-2-2-6 @ 268mhz with 3.6 volts but I deemed it un-nessicary.

a great and simple torrent program is utorrent, it allows for RSS feeds from your regular torrent sites and also has a a search box which searchs the most relevant torrent sites. Also if you go in the about section in help and press T, a little tetris easter eggs pops up while you wait for your shizzle to download at blistering speeds. Also (I know, another also) in the configuration there is a link to a speed test site which will let you work out what to set your DL/UL speeds to (very important, I had my upload set at 32KB/s as eircom set it to 256Kbs, but upon testing it, the max i'm ACTUALLY getting is closer to 17KB/s) Overflowing your upload speed can severely decrease your download speed, don't ask me how as I was sure they where kept seperate, but its true.

Finally, there is a link to a site in the configuration settings which will tell you if the port you've forwarded is actually open. Even if you've forwarded it on your router, your firewall might still be blocking it, in which case you'll need to set the firewall to allow the program as an exception and also allow the port it uses as an exception, or you might need to set up a static NAT as well in your router settings.

Also for WinXP SP2 you'll need to install this patch which will allow up to 50 connections to be made thus increasing your D/L speed. Run it and set it to allow 50 connections as opposed to XPs measly 10 (don't they know about peerage?)

Now, i've helped you. So you can help the rest of us by SEEDing, and not being a leeching whore

P.S: People who have to tell you they are downloading Legal stuff, usually aren't :D
