Thinkin of buying an mp3 player that will hold bout 25gb of mp3s and wma tracks (have no particular need for a video viewer), was told by a mate that the Philips GoGear is the way to go(see link) ... its £159 sterling. any advice would be greatly appreciated, is there better out there. Ive €230 quid to play with. Thanks

you couldn't go wrong with sourcing a iRiver h140 from somewhere, it's discontinued but it's one of the best players i've ever used.

it uses some technology (the name alludes me atm) but there's no need for software to place mp3's on to the mp3 player, it's just drag and drop.

the sound quality is sublime, with the accessories you get aswell, the prepackaged headphones are rebranded sennheisers and probably the best prepackaged headphones you can get.

the remote control is far superior to anyone elses aswell.

some downsides it maybe a big too big and awkward for your liking, it's certainly not as slim or thin as a ipod but for what it lacks in "fashion" it makes up for in features.

it has record function, radio, line in just to name a few...

couple it with rockbox and you're laughing.

i've had no experience with the phillips player, but surely you can have a play around with your friends, also go into a shop and play around with display models, because ultimately people here can give you their opinions but only you can pick which player truely suits you.

iAudio X5 has to be the best available and now also works with Rock Box. You really cant beat the sound quality.

well sorry if you got that from my post that the phillips player is worthless, the truth be know is i don't know. it could be a great player and suit your needs to a tee, but since i haven't used one i can't say good nor bad things about it.

the mp3 player that felixdhc reccommended the iaudio x5 seems to be what the iriver h140 was 2/3 years ago. it has all the features you're looking at models are from 20-60 gig and come in standard or extra battery life versions (x5l) (isn't available on the 60gigger as far as i know) and has a radio.

it will play any format you throw at it ie. mp3's/wma's/wav's/ogg's/FLAC etc.

rockbox is an alternative firmware (software on the mp3 player) that you use to control and browse through your mp3's. it also adds a lot of features like for example on the iriver h140 it made OTG (on the go) playlists and gapless playback, both which weren't in the orignal firmware.

just as a side note if you do end up going for the iaudio, do not get the X5v version, this comes without the radio, so that's one of your main features gone. if you can live without the radio then you can consider the x5v.:p
