The Poincaré Conjecture, the fifth millennium problem, has probably just been solved by two Chinese mathematicians Cao Huaidong and Zhu Xiping.
The two will probably half the million.

I thought this had basically been proved by Grigori Perelman:

Apparently these guys put the "finishing touches to the complete proof of the Poincaré Conjecture". It sounds like Perelman deserves the prize.

Perelman's proof hasn't been submitted to a journal and peer-reviewed and one the conditions for winning the million dollars is that it be peer-reviewed. The Clay Institute is thinking about changing the conditions because it is thought that his proof has already gone through more rigourous checking than a peer reviewed paper.

Perelman has also stated that he doesn't actually want the money, he can always send it to me...

Yeah that's true, I think its in one of those links actually. Still a proof is a proof. I reckon they should alter the rules and accept his considering it's undergone more rigourous checking.

I believe he turned down another respected prize in maths so he obviously doesn't like the fame.

Apparently the proof is relatively short for these kind of things.
The Poincaré conjecture was probably the easiest of the problems and it was the one with the most work done on it.

So it could be a while before the rest are solved.
