    Hi there,

I have a Mat****a UJ-822Da DVDRW in my HP Nx8220 laptop. Now the problem is that I cant burn anything to it. I have tried numerous software such as nero and divX but it keeps saying that I dont have a disk in the drive.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

What discs have you tried? Have you tried different media?
Have you checked whether there is a firmware update available (from HP only if your machine is still under warranty.)

have you ever successfully burned anything with it?
have you tried using the burning software provided with the laptop?

I have tried numerous disks - TDK's DVD- and DVD+ for example.

And no I haven't checked if there is a firmware upgrade - I'll check that as it is still under warranty for the next month or so

    Windows doesn't burn to DVD.
Sonic RecordNow accompanies the laptop (Please post in the laptop forum in future); use that.

Hi - I have used the Sonic RecordNow just there and it wont take the DVD-RW/DVD+RW disks either. It keeps saying to insert blank disk!!!

Although it will take CD-RW disks for a while but then says there is an error and ejects the disk.

If anybody can give me another direction to choose - although while im writing this , I am beginning to think that I will have to send it back to HP.

    try this,

Check whether your IMAPI CD-burn COM service has been disabled or has stopped running. (run msconfig, or look it up >via Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services).
    >
    >Mark it as a start-up service, reboot, and start the service manually if it still doesn't run (again by Control >Panel/AdTools/Services).

heck whether your IMAPI CD-burn COM service has been disabled or has stopped running. (run msconfig, or look it up >via Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services).

Bear in mind this only affects windows' built in CD burning support.

Look for a firmware updgrade and also install forceASPI.

Failing that you migh have a failing\dirty laser.

Can it read disks okay? If not you can be pretty sure its a hardware problem.

Have you tried +/- R (not just RW)?
Can the drive read DVD-ROM (Recorded movie discs)?

Again, look for a firmware update.
Completely uninstall Nero (google for the nero uninstaller).
    Try again.

    What was the solution?

Shouldn't the drive still do exactly what it says on the tin without the latest firmware?

I couldn't find a firmware upgrade - but I tried even more different brand disks. and first they wouldnt work either. So I contacted HP support online and he suggested that:
    1. Uninstall the driver listed under DVD/CD in device manager.
    2. Restart the computer(Once you restart the computer, windows will install the driver automatically).
    3. After you restart the computer, try to burn the CD at the lowest speed.

After I did that I tried the disks again and although the only one that worked was the Imation DVDs I didnt mind as at least something works in the drive.

On reading esquier's post I suggested these steps to someone having a similar problem and his solution was right on the money.

I suggest you try it and then try the media you can't currently burn.

The UJ-822Da is known to have a really crappy media table in it's firmware so it can be very fussy about what media works [To burn a DVD it's media code must be in the firmware which is why firmware updates are important for media support].

Try keeping to common brands like Verbatim branded media along with the Imation discs.
