I have a friend who can pick up his neighbours broadband signal and has been downloading loads off lime wire and bittorrent. Is he allowed to do this? as I was told by a work colleague that their boyfriend was fined for downloading off lime wire and not bittorrent. Also I have a wireless signal at home, is it possible for someone to highjack my signal:mad:

Have a look through the Wireless forum for previously discussed methods (MAC filtering, in combination with WPA) to prevent unauthorised use of your network.

afaik you are responsible for what happens on your wireless network so if your neighbour hijacks your wireless network and starts doing illegal activities you are liable.

Gaining unauthorised access to someone else's network is illegal. The person who is owns the wireless network is doing nothing wrong and cannot be held liable.

People in the uk are being charged with this unauthorised access.

hmm that's odd, i would always thought it would be the other way.

like if you leave the keys in your car you deserve to have it robbed. likewise with your broadband if it's unsecured you deserve to have it hijacked.

Unauthorised access to a network is unlawful.
Using their bandwidth such that it would have an impact on performance and have legal repercussions for the owner is unlawful and unethical. The owner of the network is legally responsible for activities traced back to their network.
