That last thread - "Beer Beere Beer" got me thinking.

Has anyone here tried brewing their own Beer? I have another 2months of Summer holidays - I'm going to give it a try :)

If anyone has done it before - share your experiences.

http://eartheasy.com/eat_homebrew.htm - it looks simple enough.
I'll try this one and then try different flavours as the Summer goes on.

edit: Just need to find -

    - One 10-gallon "food grade" plastic pail with lid. Cost: about $12.00
    - Siphon hose. You'll need a 74" length of 5/16" "food grade" vinyl tubing. Cost: $2.00
    - Hose clamp for siphon. Cost: $1.00
    - Twelve 2- liter plastic pop bottles, with lids.

    - Hydrometer. Cost: $8.00. A thermometer is also useful.
    - Large pot, or turkey roaster.

Vodka jelly is alot easier IMO. That or putting skittles in vodka.

    Comes highly recommended :D

Yeah - but I'm a financially challenged student. These skills might help me get through college without spending too much.

Mods - I just saw that Beer forum - sorry for mistake - feel free to move or link the thread.

Ya but think of how royally fuucked you'd be if you wind up in hospital after poisoning yourself?

Medical bills aren't cheap. if its money your worried about, get a job and budget!

Being a financially challenged student was the reason I used the techniques above.

Anyway, when you're a student, you can't go wrong with 4 cans of Druids for a fiver or a bottle of Buckfast. Brewing your own beer won't be cheaper than either of those.

There is a beer wine and spirits forum you know with threads on this and giving advice already.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from there. Can't go wrong with Dutch Gold either (89c a can).

On a kinda different topic: does anyone know the legalities of brewing your own drink and selling it on? Bit risky methinks - but worth looking into all the same.

I noticed that a minute ago - and edited a post further up the page asking a mod to link/move the thread.

You need a licence to sell any kind of alcohol so you'd be charged by the guards if caught.

Cider is easier to make I think.

I'd say brewing you own beer isn't that hard. It's just getting the equipment. I'd love to try it some day. I like local ales and stuff so I'd like to mess around. I remember making beer in biology class. We never got to drink it :(

I've done a few home brews in my student days but I think only one of them was actually what could be considered drinkable. For the other brews I'd tend to get a bit carried away when making them and trying to increase the alcohol content which resulted in dangerously stong drink, either that or they just tased revolting.

    Still good fun trying though.

I'm locking this because the 'homebrew how to' thread, stickied at the top of this forum, pretty much covers everything this thread is about.
