I am going to tile the walls of my bathroom for the first time. Previously they were painted with a silk emulsion. What preparation is needed to get the tile adhesive to bond to the walls, if any?

Coarse electric sander I'd say. Get yourself one of those NuTool cheapo electric sanders (Lidl, Aldi, McQuillans tools, Woodie's etc.) - they're really cheap (about €20) and you can just throw them away when you're finished with them! (or keep it till it enevitably breaks - mine's still working...)

We always completely marine ply the bathrooms ,and silicone the gaps on the sheets .Guaranteed a done job if the ply is up ,no leaks.

Normally just find where the lats are and screw the boards to the wall.

If the paint is sound with no blistering or peeling (check a section and see how hard it is to remove with a paint scraper), then the preparation needed is just to score the walls so the adhesive gets some bit of a key to the wall. Use the corner of a paint scraper / chisel or other sharp object. It should be fine with this.
