What websites are out there that specialise in alternative music? I've recently thrown out a load of tapes from the early 90s and want to replace them on CD but I'd say it's gonna be tough to find them in the shops (they would have been imports at the time etc). Any chance of a sticky, John2/Lucutus? :o

Amazon Marketplace / ebay / www.eil.com / www.gemm.com are good for second hand stuff

What in particular are you seeking?

Are you looking for a webstore that specialises in alternative music or a website for information on what these releases were?

Aquarius Records is quite good. Forced Exposure are a great US distributor.

    CD Universe
    Music Stack

Don't really know what these guys are like to buy from but they might be worth a look - www.allmusic.com.

Alternative music is too vague a term to give links to specific websites about it. Some people consider pop to be alternative(contradiction I know, but sure someone on this thread has linked to NME's website), so basically any general music website could qualify...

http://www.cdbaby.com is a good site for buying independant label albums.

Many, many thanks one and all for your suggestions!
John2, webstores are what I'm looking for - cheers. JC 2K3, I know what you're saying and I suppose if I typed any of the titles into search on Amazon they'd come up, but they're usually unavailable so that's why I'm looking for a place that would be more specialised and more likely to stock what I'm looking for. nlgbbbblth, where to start? It's actually that discussion on underrated bands that inspired me to update my collection. I have a couple of import compilations of EPs by Curve and Ride on cassette and they're pretty knackered now. Ditto the mini-album To Mother by Babes in Toyland. There's a Lush singles compilation I also want (not Gala). Think it's a Japanese import.

    presume it's
Curve - Pubic Fruit. Goes for around £12 - £20 second hand but I saw it HMV Belfast as recently as last summer. A new copy is on Amazon USA for $12. Click!

Ride - Smile. Was reissued 3 or 4 years ago. Has now vanished from the shops here but a new copy is on Amazon USA for $10. Click!

Lush - Topolino [Japanese CD compiling b sides from Love Life singles] or Ciao! The Best Of Lush. The latter is easy pick up, the former is not - tends to go for anything up to £100.

Babes On Toyland - To Mother is on Amazon UK Marketplace now for £7. Click! and a new copy is on Amazon USA for $10. Click!

Amazon USA looks to be the best bet.

nlgbbbblth, they're the very ones! You are fabulous! Thank you so much! Actually, I'm not bothered with Lush's stuff from '96 - seemed to fall into line too much with the whole Britpop thing. The compilation I'm looking for is called Cookie - it's the two EPs off 1994's Split LP. Have been rummaging around. Seems to be unattainable. Suppose I could just order the two EPs! Thanks again!

    www.gemm.com

can be good for hard to find stuff but can also be pretty pricy

Yeah, I had a look at it. There's some fabulous stuff there all right - and so much of it. Everything under the sun it seems! Thanks a mil, Derek.

Don't think they're open for business anymore - not since around 2003 or so.
Got some great stuff off them in the past.
