Check in the bottom-right hand corner of the screen for the volume icon - see attached picture. Notice the little red circle - that means I have the sound muted.

Do you have this icon? If so, does it have the little red circle? If it does, sound is muted. To un-mute, double-click on it and a box will appear, depending on your sound card, there may be a tick box with "Mute" on it. Un-tick this and see what happens.

Edit: I just noticed I got the wireless icon in that screen shot. The icon I am talking about is the speaker icon, the furthest on the right in my picture.

Ok the sound is apparently on but nothing is coming out. It was muted but is now unmuted but nothing.
Also the dvds wont run on it. It seems like the drives are mixed up.

Right, let's forget about the DVDs for now - let's focus on the sound.

Check the obvious, that you have speakers, they are powered on and they are plugged into the correct slot on your sound card.

Next go to start->settings->control panel->Sounds and Audio devices. Go to the second tab, Sounds.

In the Program Events part of that window, there should be a range of events with sounds associated with them. The first one is generally asterisk - click on this and click on the small triangle (play) towards the bottom right of the window. See attached image for details. You should hear a sound.

Post back on how you get on.

Make sure sound isnt disabled in Services. Click Start->Run and type services.msc in the box and then OK, then scroll down to Windows Audio and make sure that service is started (it should be set to automatic).

I've never heard of internal speakers.

What exactly do you mean by internal - is it a laptop? If not, where exactly are the speakers located?

It is a Dell optiplex gx520 tower block computer. The speakers are inside the tower block.

There's a mention of "Internal Dell Business Audio speaker" on the Dell sites, etc. No idea if that's just a fancy name for the PC speaker.

Gut feeling is that you don't have any speakers to play back DVD audio. Try plugging in some headphones into head phone socket or the audio out port. See if you hear anything.

I got speakers and they work but it does have internal speakers. Can anyone get the dvd player to work. If i put the dvd in it just continues to load. But when i hit the exit button the wrong drive opens up. It makes me think the drives are set wrong but i dont know how to fix it.

Sorry, it does say Dell business audio speaker. What ever that means. Never seen a desktop with internal speakers. you learn something new every day.

Did that dell come with Cyberlink Power Dvd? Does it open when you put movie dvd in?

No it didnt come with a power dvd. The wrong drive opens up. The drive that says dvd on it stays shut. I was told the dvd has been disabled but am finding it hard to get help restoring it.

What drives you got? Do you have a dvd-rom & a dvd-rw? Rom drive is just a dvd reader, rw is the burner (can also read). Open my computer and check which is which (rom prob d, rw prob e).

Go in2 device manager and check ie.... Rt click my computer/ properties/ hardware/ device manager. Does your dvd drive show up here? Is there a question mark beside it? Is this device enabled?

Ah they exist allright, My cousin has a hp desktop computer(came from an office, small form factor) and it has an internal speaker(ie, a single speaker mounted inside the case) Its about the same quality as laptop speakers but I dont think its stereo sound. Music and stuff sounds fine from it though. I found it a bit strange too when I came across it but there you go.........

I don't understand what you are saying here.

Go to My Computer and let us know what drives are there. When you say you were told the dvd drive has been disabled, who told you?

Has anyone thought of asking if the audio cable from the back of the drive is connected. Just a thought.

Do you hear sound other than with respect to the dvd player. i.e. Do you hear the windows logo introduction music when you turn the computer on first! Right click my computer and then devices and see if there are anything wrong with the hardware! Have you tried using windows media player to try and play the dvd instead of the other dvd player program? Hope you sort it out ;)

Yeah, nearly all Compaq/HP business desktops I've seen (PII Dekspros, Evos, newer HP stuff) have internal mono speakers, and some Dells I've seen do too. They're a bit bigger than the typical "PC speaker" you'd get (if there's one mounted in the case), but they still sound pretty crappy IMO.

download realplayer ,basic free version to play dvds if you have no dvd player programs installed.go to control panel ,click sound audio device, click audio tab, look at audio, sound playback default device, to see is there any device soundcard internal ennabled ,if not go bios,f1,or del, after booting up pc,advanced settings, enable onboard sound.
