New online payment system by Google

    Interesting to see if it will pickup or not.
    Google Inc. plans to introduce an online payment service today that will allow people to buy products from a variety of merchants using a single account, challenging eBay's popular PayPal payment business.

    Google Checkout is yet another sign of the Mountain View Internet giant's ambitions to expand from its roots as a search engine and compete in areas that have been proven successes for others.

    Google hopes to speed up online shopping by eliminating the need for users to repeatedly enter personal information to complete purchases. Instead, users who shop at participating merchants will be able to buy products after making only a few keystrokes, provided they have already stored their name, address and credit card number in a Checkout account.

    Yeah this has been in the works for a while.
    I've been wrong about google before, but I really doubt that this will knock paypal off the top spot.

    In any case they are not in direct competition. The google system was originally supposed to be just a payment method for its advertising customers.

    If Google plan everything the right way this will no doubt challenge Paypal. And probably win, in a year or so.

    Gmail pops to mind and thats still classed as beta. Think it looks good.

    Oh man I fuppin' love gmail! Had hotmail back in college, damn thing kept filling up every ten minutes from all the porn we used to send around! :D
