350D - replacing kit lens.

I got the kit lens with my 350D and I also bought the 50mm Canon lens afterwards (which I love and every 350D owner should have!) But I want to change the kit lens now.

I've narrowed it down to 2. Either the Canon EF-S 17-85mm or the Sigma EX DC 18-50mm 2.8. My shots fall into 2 catergories, a) pics of family, friends, farting about, etc and b) gig shots (usually low light, which is why I'm drawn to the Sigma & why I bought the 50mm in the first place but the lack of zoom is letting me down).Price wise the Canon is 650 and the Sigma is 450. I know the canon has IS but is that worth the extra spend when compared to what I'm going to be shooting?

I'd love to hear from anyone who has used either lens or any other opinion please.

    Other opinion .
Check out what the 18-50 is like on a full frame digital camera like a 5D.
i'd try and find out how bad the vignetting is on standard camera.

Although you'll always need a walk around lens and the 17-85 is suppose to be a great walkaround lens.NO EFS lens fits either 5D or 35MM

The 18-50 got great reviews and if it worked on the likes of a 5d without vignetting ,I'd go for it.

I'd go with the Sigma. Maybe that's because I've got a morbid fear of EF-S lenses and when/if Canon will drop the EF-S support in future dslr models. There's also a Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 you may want to consider. It comes out around €300 incl. shipping from this guy - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sigma-17-70mm-f-2-8-4-5-equ-to-28-105mm-lens-NEW-B3_W0QQitemZ200001559762QQihZ010QQcategoryZ4687QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

I had the same problem when I was shopping for my 350D. I knew the kit was awful so I wanted a decent lens to start with. I looked at the same ones you are considering and in the end went for the 17-85mm.
I will honestly tell you that I could not be happier with this lens. Mostly I went with it cos i liked the idea of the IS but also as a work colleague of mine has the same lens and I got to play with it. The second I picked it up I loved it. On the 350 you are talking more 27-136 than 17-85 and it is surprisingly wide. Just took a look there through my flickr stream to post but ill let ya check that out yourself cos i cant pick something. All shots are taken with this lens.
The IS is great, personally I think it is worth it. I have just ordered another IS lens.
The 17-85 is the perfect walk around lens, nice and light and very versatile. I cannot tell you if it is better than the other lenses mentioned in the thread as I have not tried them, but I can tell you that Im super happy with my 17-85, as is anyone who has borrowed it ;)

Very fair and unbiased review here http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/canon_1785_456_is/index.htm
