Merrion rumours - poker still going

I heard the same thing, but for me it is second hand.
Got a couple of emails from friends telling me it was closed 'for good'.
As I understand it, this is unconfirmed....

Bernard messaged me today to say the pit was closed "for refurbishment" but that poker was going ahead.

yeah apparently the poker room is business as usual, but how can they drop te main income and pay the overheads on the poker tables alone?

is the taxman at the door? maybe a back door entrance by the very famous politician trying to close these clubs?

make you think about it. who knows, could be legit

On reflection, there simly must be more to it than simple 'refurbishment'.
Firstly, why spend money on refurbishment when the legality of casinos in Ireland is still in question?
Secondly, I have worked in numerous casinos during refurbishments, and the one thing they don't do, is CLOSE. You get to work around all the stuff going on. It simply costs too much in lost revenue (and the fact that you force your punters find alternative venues), providing your gaming area is profitable in the first place....

I closed the other thread because the information wasn't 100%, and the fact that a regular on the forum rang the Merrion who said it was business as usual.

This thread is again, not first hand, not from any reliable or verifiable source other then friends of the OP.

Then someone (DeV) who is on friendly terms with someone directly from the Merrion says that the poker side of things is unchanged.
So I'm inclined to go with what Tom has heard and maybe lock this thread tomorrow unless something more concrete comes up. Thread title changed.

Fair enough lafortezza, lock the thread...it IS just rumours and hearsay after all.
If there is any substance to it then it will come out sooner rather than later....and if not ....down the memory hole it goes.
I was just a tiny bit vindicated that someone else raised it, so it has come from somewhere (and not just me!)

They probably just laid some poeple off and it's been exaggerated...after all I can't honestly really see them closing....why would they? Unless they sold the property.

Well I was in the Merrion tonight until about 2, before I was went into the Fitz, and the Poker room was certainly open.

The poker room is open. The casino games area is closed.
Reason for the casino games area closure is not clear but officially its for refurbishment.

Everything else is speculation and should be kept to yourself.

well to be honest i think poker should be taken away from black jack and roulette and all those other horrible house games. poker rooms should just be poker rooms and nowt else. merrions game on a tuesday is 1 off the best games and certainly the best value game in town. wes mc g weso took it down well chop chop last tuesday. they had 2 great cash games with loads off dead money so i myself will miss the merrion but hey for sure poker is still on so flip the games floor. i wont miss it and i can assure u there will be a lot more people better off whilst the games floor is closed down.

I would advise anyone with Merrion chips to cash them in just incase. The Fitz have stopped accepting them.
