Can you change Pentium 3 751mhz to Pentium 4 3.2 GHz without changing the motherboard?

its physically impossible im afriad (Different socket), even if it was:

    1. Your RAM would be incompatible
    2. Your power supply might not be able to supply enough juice for the new chip
    3. You possibly older HD would cause a performance bottleneck too.

Sorry the news isn't better :(

Have you priced a P4 3.2Ghz. Nearly cheaper to buy a completely new machine than just the chip.

you,d have to put in a new mobo, new ddr memory 512meg,and a new cpu ,amd cpus are cheaper and faster than p4 cpus, generally for games,or multimedia.sell you pc,get at least a pc with agp graphics slot or pci express graphics slot.or buy a amd or pc p4 base unit, plug in your own monitor and keyboard, mouse.you can buy base units from jaguar pcs dublin,or kompett.ie , or boards.ie computer for sale forum, get at least amd 2600. 2.6 cpu ghz, with agp slot.

Don't see the point. Buy a cheap Dell from the outlet and stick a gfx card in it.

Amd cpus are cheaper and faster than Pentium 4 cpus, mainly in games and multimedia. It might be worth picking up one of those. Get at least a Amd 2600 cpu or a P4 2.6ghz cpu. Sell your current pc and get at least a pc with either an agp graphics slot or pci express graphics slot.

Or buy a Amd or P4 base unit, plug in your own monitor, keyboard and mouse. You can buy base units from Jaguar pcs dublin or kompett. Boards has its own computer for sale forum."

He does seem to have a problem with the use of comma's, full stops and paragraphs.

It is impossible to run a 3.2ghz p4 on a p3 board, but you can use other lower end chips on it. There are converters out there for it. No idea if their on sale anywhere these days, but ebay should have some.

I've never heard of any adaptors for using P4's on PIII motherboards - the archetecture's probably too different to allow this. The only adaptors I've heard of for socket 370 motherboards are for using Tualitins (FC-PGA2; the last of the PIIIs) on earlier FC-PGA boards, and then you're still limited to about 1.2GHz (any faster PIII barely exists in real life :D).

Fastest thing you can fit to a PIII board is a Tualatin 1.4 GHz Celeron (256kb) or a PIII 1.4 GHz Pentium (512kb). The Tualatin celerons are the same as PIII. You'd need an adapter though. They are often faster than P4 1.4-1.7ghz.

I don't see the point though. A Pentium 3 750Mhz is fast enough for most office tasks. The only reason you might want to upgrade is to play games or work with multimedia. In which case you need a new PC. You'll get a decent one that can take a GFX card (5150) off the Dell Outlet for about €500. or a non gaming office machine (1100) for about €260.

By the time you upgrade the PIII with a gfx card, CPU more ram etc you'll be close to the price a new machine.
