When I connect my terrestial tv connection directly into the tv the picture is perfect but when I connect it to my dvd recorder / sky box the picture then deteoriates especially for rte 2.

    Any suggestions

what channel does the sky box and dvd recorder output on?

The tv is a few years old and believe it or not has not scart sockets. The dvd recorder is into av1 and sky is into av2.
The tv aerial is into the dvd recorder and from that back to the tv.

The terrestial channels are on channels 1 - 4 on the tv.

in order to tape of sky I use a scart connection between the sky box and the dvd recorder.

Should i be setting this up some other way ?

I suspect it is interference radiated by the circuitry in those units (DVD/Sky box, probably DVD), I have seen this before.

It would be worst at VHF, and I assume he is receiving RTE on VHF.

Does the interference vary if you move about the aerial cables?

Try using better quality (well shielded) TV aerial cable like CT100 and better quality cables for the RF loopthrough on DVD recorder.
