Moving into HR???

    I'm looking to change career in a competley different direction. I'm a retail sales exec doing reasonably well and am looking to move into HR.

    Origionally I studied HR in college, but I only got to certificate level and which wasn't CIPD recognised, and don't have any practicle experience in the area.

    The problem is as I've decieded to try moving into HR. I know I am under qualified and have decieded to do a night course; I can get CIPD qualification with 12 months and then work my way up to a full BA. I've applied to a fair few companies looking for a basic admin role in HR, but they aren't even writing back. The letters have been carefully written to "sell" the skill's I could bring to the job, I've also rewritten my CV to emphasis more the admin than the sales side.

    As far as I can see, I'm doing everything I can, but still hitting a blank wall, I know it takes time, but has anyone got any suggestions.

    I have considered approaching my own company, but they way their HR dept operates you need alot of expericen from the word go.

    You're clearly too smart to work in a HR role in Ireland ;) Honestly, it is where the managers that have failed in other areas of the company often tend to get placed. I've never once come across a good HR manager.

    Would you look at a different management type role? or if HR appeals to you that much, perhaps you'd look at recruitment? There always seems to be jobs on offer in that area, though having never worked in the field myself I can't say if there's a reason for that.

    Just think, these are the "nice" people you're trying to get in with :)

    The 12th commandment is "thou shalt not work in HR". It comes after the regular 10 and "Thou shalt not key thy neighbour's car".

    Maybe what you need is something which catches the eye of a company you want to work for. Something which says you are serious about working for them and make it difficult for them to say no.

    Maybe continue in your present role while working away at the qualification? After you've got it then you can point to it as proof that you really want to work in this field.

    Hi There,
    I have been working in HR for 6 months now...and it is defo great!!It is very challenging so you really shouldnt give up.You should go ahead with the CIPD certification!!

    get into recruitment even with an agency, keep doing qualification, and then try get into a company's recruitment section (as you will have some experience of recruiting) and then try get into the more general HR side......

    Thats the way it normally happens

    It's difficult to get into Gillo. My girlfriend already has a Masters in Psychology, and is currently in her 2nd year pursuing a HR Degree. She's a member of CIPD, and is trying her hardest to get a role involving HR. Most jobs require experience of approx 3 years, so it's a bit of a catch 22 situation.

    'On the square', I hope you get a start in the field, after all, you've put in enough 'labour' to get the position, and once you do, you can move on again to a bit of 'refreshment' in life ;)

    I am in the same senario.

    The situation with me is a bit f***ed up.Last 3 years the laws of the country just F***ed me as a foreigner

    I am a Graduate Accountant + Diploma in Accounting & Finance from DBS

    + MCSE 2000

    came here and worked in call center an IT for 3 years (I know those who worked in call center can salute me for that)!:mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:

    coz i was non EEAstudent now i am married and allowed to work but the Call center Experience wont let me get anywhere :mad:

    But spirits are high and i started applying accounting roles

    and going for MBA or ACCA once i get the job in accounting

    also 2 years back i was Offered the job for 27,000 staring salary and i couldnt start that job as i was F***ing Student

    But i know i will rise from all this and i know i can only move forward from this.

    Please note i am here in this country since last 6.5 years

    Despite all this i still love Ireland.Excellent place Excellent people

    Hi I live in in county Wexford and have three years experience working in a Recruitment company. I am considering doing a CIPD qualification can you tell me where I can do this and how long it takes also if it is possible to do it part time or by correspondence.

    Thanks yes I have checked website and there doesn't seem to be any courses be me ie at closest centres Waterford and Carlow

    I work as a training officer and would be CIPD certified

    HR is definitely one of those areas that will always require experience so if you dont have any you are going to have a hard time getting an interview nevermind a job. Other ways into HR would be to transfer to a HR dept from another dept i.e. you are already working there OR get a job with a recruitment consultancy (which is a sales role TBH) and then try and apply for HR jobs or in-house recruitment positions. Its very frustrating but thats the way it is or at least thats the way it is in Ireland:(
