I will be bombarding you all with questions on all things DIY .... as I will have to do all the work myself (to the pin of my collar with mortgage /solicitors etc!!) and hanging a photo aBout 3 years ago was the cloest Ive come to DIY !!

Anyway ...my first query ...I have to replace all the windows and doors with PVC ....can anyone recommend a good company ... who are easy on the pocket !!!....:)

    around the midlands !!

    Thanks !!

My advice, based on my personal experience, would be to avoid that large Dublin based company that have been around for ages.
PM me if you want more details as to the hell I have been through trying to get my doors draught free over the last 6 months.

<edit> the quality of the materials was fine, but the installation was poor to say the least.
I am also not terribly happy with the fact that the last two times they have been out to redo the front door they have emptied their plaster bucket into my flower beds...

They were out again yesterday...(I think that makes 6 times but to be honest I cant remember, it hasnt been me there everytime so it gets confusing, naturally I didnt think it would get this far so I wasnt taking notes...)
The have re-installed the door frame (for the second time) and it now seems to be a bit better. I wont really know until we get a windy day though.
The problem all along has been that the front door is warped.
I 've held a level and even just a plank against it top to bottom and it bows in at the centre.
What they have done now is "adjust" the frame to try and match the door.
It seems to be ok ( I havent had the wind whistling around the door yet) I will update after a windy day.

At least this time I havent had to choose between a draught and a door that was too tight to open.

So they're bascially the same as wood then!?

Makes me even less enthusiastic about paying someone ten grand for what is basically glass and plastic.

    Well I dont think so.
None of my windows have give in them.
Neither of the French Doors has give in it.
I personally think they either gave me a dodgy door or it was stored incorrectly (not flat)

    Hi Longfordlad.

    Also try this forum http://www.askaboutmoney.com/forumdisplay.php?f=18

It's the Home and Gardens section and there's loads of threads about where to source your windows...

    Hi Longford,

We got a quote of 3900.00 for 8 big windows (1.70 x 1.30) and 1 pair of french doors. Colour oak. Incl installation and VAT. I must point out that we wanted fixed windows.

Try Gradys in Charlestown, Co. Mayo.

LL - if you are buying on price Munster Joinery are usually hard to beat, they cover all areas and can have a rep call out to you.

Pvc door, should be airtight , if its a rebated door, onto a frame.

You wont get a door that fits better than a face rebated door. Whether its timber or Pvc.
99% of all pvc doors are face rebated. That should be 100%.

Of course thats assumming that they installed the reinforcing section into the full length of the stile;) Which maybe they did not.

How do...I'm also looking to fit replacement windows in my house in Beaumont Dublin. I got a qoute from Munster Joinery of 2100 for 1 bay and 3 standard windows. This seems reasonable but Munster do not fit replacement windows, they will only sell them to you. Does anyone know who I could get to fit them? Couple of people have said there's about a day's work in it. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Ciaran.
