Could someone explain the difference between libel, slander and defamation. My simple understanding is libel refers to written and slander refers to verbal.

Pretty much, Libel is written/printed (pictures etc.) and slander is the oral equivelant.
Defamation is the term which covers both; to de-fame somebody is the act, libel and slander would be the method.
