Nothing wrong with discussing the process, the only problem is discussing where to source certain types of torrents.

It usually depends on your upload speed and the seeders/peers ratio.

If you can download at 1Mb/sec then you probably have up to a 100kb/sec upload speed but if the torrent doesn't require that speed because there aren't enough peers downloading then it's normal that it remains low.

i dont think ratios are important , i know some wont agree. I have actually no problem with dnlds , ( i have a 3meg connection ) and once the file is complete i actually dont share it out anymore ... why u ask ?..... cause i dont want my ISP seeing alot of traffic, in as much as i doubt they approve of real heavy usage, so not uploading will reduce the total

oh, it's the weekly torrent thread weeks inevitably turns into a free music/film debate which results in the cyber police whipping out their padded locks.

i wouldnt worry about uploading, look after no.1 ;) you don't wanna be seen uploading too much either.

they reckon 900 million tracks were downloaded illegaly ( worlwide ) in six months alone last year, not to mention movies etc, so i think they are trying to clamp down in one way or another !! ..... i aint heard of any cases here though.. im sure there is though

i heard of a guy being fined €20k for having 3000 illegal songs on his PC. pretty sure it was in the times, page 3 -top of the page about 3 months ago (ive a photographic memory :) ) think it was a teenager, using kazaa or something.

if you dont have a clue what your doing and download mass amounts of illegal material there is a slight chance you'll be caught.

for the average paddy who is tuned in to his technology and knows how to blend in, there shouldnt be any problems. it is atm uploaders who are being targeted anyway as without them, nobody can download.

You may be "caught" but you won't have broken any laws. It's only uploading copyright material which is legally ambiguous at the moment.

If you have an unsecured wireless connection it could be your neighbour doing the uploading tbh...

exactly, and if you cut off your upload speed, you get really poor download speed. catch 22.

Bit-torrent users have not yet been targeted, due to the fact thats its hard to prove that you can get the entire file off the one person like with kazza and be able to find the biggest uploaders. But they will try out a few test cases first.

As for getting your upload up, if you have Dsl its a waste of time. Be worry'd about you download speed and dont bother with a 1:1 ratio.

boy have we gone off the beaten track here ... lol.. poor jordie aint even got an answer yet !.
Anyway i think its hard to police as : one : because of the huge amount of users, and two : if they close a site down they simply open up again, look at what happened pirate bay for example.

I dont think your upload speed really matters. I have a 1mb down 256kb up connection so i download much more than i upload and it never affects me.

yip , most software will tell u about ratios etc and they will say it effect your dnld speed, but ****** i say ..... they only want u to seed :D

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,912 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ponster

Seeing as most people here have missed the point of the original question...

jordie, it should be possible to search the n'et for a torrent which needs a lot of seeds and will ensure a high demand of your upload speed, just to test it, but I can't give you anything here.

Just because you want the file, doesn't mean others will. Often people don't have a fast connection, thus can't download off you very fast. TBH, leave it going, and over the night, you should see it increase.
