Always fancied a Toyota MR2 MK1 since they came out in the mid '80's but could never afford one when they were new. Came across a really clean 1988 model recently & am slightly tempted. Rang AXA classic insurance & was told that it is too new to be covered by classic insurance. Anyone know of other companies who would cover this car on a "classic" type policy?. Already have a policy on my road car.

    T.

If you check the sticky above or the post below they will answer most of your questions.

Sounds like you are between two stools on that one.

axa are langers they said that a friend of mine with 21 yr old porche would have got classic ins if it wasnt a porche???? just bought a mark 1 myself the best quote i could get was from the dodgy quinn. they came in 1/3 the price of the other companies and i tried everyone. do it online. it could be a glitch.. then again mine has the moon roof, seemingly they will screw you with the t-bar.
b4 you buy like the lads said in the other forum--wheel archs and engine sump for rust and 5th gear. doesnt kick out but when change gear leave hand on gear stick and it will pop back a little bit// knock a bit off it might only be linkage.. make sure the cluch is not too weak, and check eng seal to gearbox for leak(some times go). leave running in one spot for a while--water pump and seals go over 100,000mls or see service for change..
and give it a good drive with the radio off// rev her high

I have yet to hear about a policy in Ireland for a 'under 20 yrs old' classic.

The nearest is the Irish Vintage Society policies from €150-€250 for 20yrs or older. www.irishvintage.ie

Without wanting to offend anyone I think a lot of people are trying to jump on a cheap insurance bandwagon.

Classic car insurance is cheaper for a reason - the cars are not used everyday, they are garaged, a second car and my understanding of the tax / NCT breaks is that they are there to assist people trying to maintain a kind of heritage. The insurance policies reflect this.

There will always be arguments about cut off points but is a 10 - 15 yr old car really a classic? If more and more people push for - and perhaps achieve - getting non-classic cars on classic type policies they insurance companies might start tightening the rules up again which is the last thing we want.

To put it another way classic car insurance policies give cheaper insurance but are subject to certain restrictions; mine for example mandates joining the owners club, other restrictions are that it must cover less than x miles, be garaged, be a second car and be more than 20 years old. Comply with teh conditions and you get the insurance. If you don't then you can't - simple!

    Its a 1972 Mini Clubman 1275gt.

I was gonna get 'normal' insurance, as i dont have (or want) a second car
, but NObody would insure the car under a normal policy because of its age, even Axa who ive been with for over 10years. Got a tip off that FBD were offering a classic policy without having a second policy. They do seem to load certain classics tho :(.

    Nice!

I went with Carole Nash for teh Merc and had no end of problems when I had to make a claim on teh policy so the "new" car is now through First Ireland. Far fewer restrictions on teh policy than CN as well (doesn't have to be garaged or have an immobiliser fitted for example). Steep (for a classic) at over €500 though, so you do pay for it.
