The new point topic broadband statistics are out.
In Noel's favourite league, the broadband growth rates, we are left in the dust by India, Morocco, Greece, Romania, Croatia, Viet Nam, Turkey, Latvia, Slovakia and Egypt.

While I think it's not a bad sign, that Ireland is not in the top ten of this league, Noel and Co. should finally stop bragging about our extraordinary successful broadband (percentage) growth rates.

If Greece are ahead of us (can't get to that page), then it signals a dismal day. There was a time where even we got to point and snigger at the Greek. Didn't they only have one confirmed DSL line in the entire country just a couple of years ago?

    The post requires registration

    relevant bits as follows

In a battle of the midgets, Greece, Cyprus, Ireland and Luxembourg managed to come first if annual growth is the measure of all things.

thats the only p[lace where Ireland even gets mentioned. In terms of penetration and usage we dont even register!

I can only assume that we get lumped into "Other EMEA" in the table on page 20

In growth terms India is leading with 330%, followed by Morocco with 240% and Greece with 200%
At the bottom of the growth table, it should come as no surprise that the South Korean broadband market continues to appear saturated.
    Population and Household Penetration

    ....

Most striking of all, South Korea, which has been way ahead of the rest of the world for years,
has been overtaken in broadband take-up by three Western European countries: Denmark,
    the Netherlands and Iceland.

Just because there is a significant growth rate here in Greece, which there obviously is, it doesn't mean that the service and prices are good. Afair the price here is still more expensive than ireland, plus the wages are lower and the cost of living is higher in some areas of life than Ireland.

Also, broadband was largely unavailable a couple of years ago, and rather unheard of as seamus says. So it's pretty easy for growth to be high if you are starting at close to zero surely?

But if Noel was Greek minister for comms, he would say: look how successful we are, we have now the highest broadband growth rates in the EU-15 and are amongst the world's best with broadband growth. At every opportunity Noel and the Commissioner bring forward this dumb argument.
But now journalists can point out to them that we are not even as good in this respect as Greece, India, Morocco, Viet Nam etc,

To be in the top ten countries for broadband penetration, still the acclaimed goal of the DCMNR (with regards to the OECD countries), we would by now need to beat Norway with a penetration of 22/100, or the equivalent of 900 000 broadband connections today.

Yeah, it's pretty daft to solely base it on growth statistics.

If you do then that means that Greece with:
1: Leased line 1mb synchronous costing 1400 euros per month with a 3000 euro flat fee one off payment. (My company is waiting for this now)
2: ADSL 512 currently at 32 euros per month for the home user. (however 12-MONTH + 4 Months Free @ 368 euros)

    is better than Ireland.

    Crazy..
